......"You are positive this is the right way?" Vance mutters into the small scrying orb hanging around his neck. ......"Yes", comes the exasperated reply from the device. "We were fortunate enough to have Niniel extract the location of the weapon caches from the target's mind and have had this place under surveillance for a month. Just remember that our top priority is rescuing the hostage." |

......"You don't have to tell me that." ......His sour tone brings a smile to Yula's lips. From her lookout spot outside the mansion, the sorceress quickly rattles off more instructions. "Okay, now head east, through the main dining hall. The entrance to the lower levels should be right past it. Wait! Hold on. I see something. What's that on the desk?" ......"It's a letter, addressed to Lord Malchion from—" ......"The House of Sylvestre. I recognize the crest." ......Vance hurriedly scans the contents of the missive and after deeming it enough to prove a conspiracy against the Empress, takes the parchment with him. He resumes his exploration of the mansion, the primary residence of some lesser lord who traded loyalty for riches. The mansion is huge and extravagant, at least on the inside, but far enough from the capital not to garner the attention of the crown. ......The security is mediocre at best and he'd already dispatched what little guards happened to come his way. Some traps were laid out but they were nothing to an infiltrator. He could dismantle those in his sleep. ......Amateurs. All of them. ......He reaches the end of the hall, and sure enough, sees the entrance. Bingo. ......The two guards don't even have time to react before Vance falls upon them, cutlass glinting and lantern casting eerie green shadows on the stone walls. A skydancer, bound and gagged, looks at him pitifully from the corner of the room. ......"Yula, the hostage is safe. And the caches are here as well." ...... "Good. I'll send in Aion's team to retrive them. And then—" ......A chill runs down his spine. "What's wrong?" ......When the Starless Sorceress next speaks, her voice is dead serious. "They have a mage. Someone's interfering with my magic. Get out of there, Vance." The orb abruptly goes dark. ......The way back out is a bit more eventful than going in. More guards appear, having apparently been alerted to the presence of intruders, so he has slightly more work to do. The highlight though, is when his dainty-looking charge grabs a candelabra and smashes it against one guard's head. When he stares at her, she looks a bit shocked but merely shrugs. ......Outside, they are greeted by a cacophony of spells whizzing past in full technicolor splendor, courtesy of the heated mage battle currently in progress between Yula and another pearlcatcher whose name he has no interest in. Vance is not entirely useless in such a scenario, but he does want to go home early because the laundry isn't going to wash itself, so when an opportunity is presented and while the enemy is still focused on Yula, he grabs a throwing knife from his boot and sends it sailing right into the mage's heart. ......Yula is not pleased, of course. She has a hand on her hip, glaring at him. "I could have handled that myself." ......"You're welcome." He says dryly. But she ignores him and instead turns to the skydancer. "Come on, let's get you—" ......"Well, hello there, beautiful. What's your name?" It's Aion and his team, blessed (or cursed in Vance's case) with impeccable timing. The former pirate is looking straight at the skydancer with his trademark roguish grin set to maximum charm level. Vance snorts. He and Aion have a sort of rivalry going on. They just seem to grate on each other's nerves. Both seem to be popular with the ladies, though. While Aion can charm almost any girl out of her skirts, females are attracted to Vance without even the slightest effort on the infiltrator's part. They're drawn to his cold, mysterious aura, though he mostly either ignores them or brushes them off. Strangely, he and Yula, who is rarely seen outside her tower except on missions, have formed a tentative friendship ever since their first job together. The sorceress attributes it to them being both loners and maybe, they sense kindred spirits in each other. ......"A-Asha." All eyes turn to the skydancer. Yula nods. "We'll get you cleaned up and fed. Then you can tell us all about your story. Aion, the weapon caches are in the lower levels. I already sent you the exact location." The former pirate winks at Asha, who blushes, before turning to leave. "I'll see you later," he promises. ......Vance crosses his arms and stares at Yula, the wide brim of his hat is askew, covering one eye. "I'll file my report tomorrow. Need some things done tonight." Like laundry. ......The sorceress narrows her eyes. "I still haven't forgotten that you killed that mage." He shrugs, unapologetic. "I was in a hurry to get things done." When her expression doesn't change, he adds "Will me buying you dinner make up for it?" ......Yula makes a noncommital noise. "Let's find out." |
