I thought clay must feel happy in the good potter's hand
Light dances across the walls of the hollow as he breathes. His massive chest rises and falls with a steady motion, his wings stretched leisurely out in this cavernous space. His head is tucked under the protective canopy, a practiced motion to preserve his slumber from the brilliance of his scales. The morning has begun but he finds himself unwilling to wake, a true artist does nothing in haste.
There is movement beneath the membrane as she squirms out from under the weight of him. With this disturbance he rolls on to his back, extending his limbs to the sky. Flecks of clay dot his arms, there are small streaks in his mane and under his talons. It is not worth the effort to be perfectly clean. She chatters easily about the day, explaining plans and appointments. He listens with attention dampered by sleep, smiling to himself for the love of her voice. When he raises his tail flicks slowly across the tiled floor, the heavy glass ball at the tip gently clinking as it drags. A trembling yawn causes the intricately detailed ceramic beads on his whiskers to clatter. He rolls them between his thumb and forefinger as he prepares an earthy tea.
She has already bustled out into the world by the time the tea is done, so he emerges, with a cup tailored to his hand, to enjoy the sun's warmth. The grass is damp from the night's rain, and he begins to form a plan to fetch the day's clay.
