Biography

The Mother

Silver Pocketwatch White Linen Fabric Scrap

She was born beneath a starless, dark sky in the Starless Strand, a sign of misfortune in the Starfall Isles. Pushing out of her shell, her large, pink eyes first adjusted to the dark, rather than the light, and in truth, she nearly crawled back into what remained of her egg and hid. But it had fallen to the ground behind her, darkened and shriveled, and she was left there among the trees, alone.

She was grown by the time she managed to find her way out of the Star Wood, with only it’s twinkling trees to guide her, and she tumbled into the water at the shore, desperate to drink. It was here she first felt truly at ease, but, as for all Guardians, she couldn’t remain for long.

She was surprised to find, as she turned, another standing on the pink, sandy shore. A dappled Skydancer, his magenta eyes sharp against the blue hues of his scales, studied her. She watched him as he made his assessment, bobbing slightly with the ebb and flow of the incoming tide.

“You are the first I have met,” he called.

“For me as well,” she replied. She emerged from the sea and spread her wings wide, water running down them in streams.

“Will you stay here?” he asked thoughtfully.

“No.” She lifted her head, looking past her shoulder and out to sea. “There is something I must find.” She looked back at him. “Will you?”

He tilted his head, eyes narrowed in concentration. “I think I should like to see where you go.”

She smiled contentedly. “Well, then.”

Together, they spread their wings, pushing themselves into the air and soon leaving the Starfall Isles behind. He allowed her to lead, despite the mainland shrinking behind them and the ocean bright and wide before them. They flew for hours, but soon, small masses of floating ice started to appear. The further they flew, the larger the ice masses became until suddenly, a large, expansive mass came into view. Feeling the exhaustion, both dragons landed less than gracefully on it’s shores.

Once she had regained their breath, she raised her head, taking in her surroundings. It was flat, white, and bright, so, so bright, as far as the eye could see. It was so very different from the dark Star Wood she had been born into, with the sun gleaming off of every surface, that she felt drawn to move deeper into the heart of the Icefield.

Inevitably, night fell, and the temperature with it. They needed to find shelter. Already, she could feel the frost curling around her scales, and her tail was feeling heavy and stiff. It drooped, and began dragging through the snow. She turned her head from side to side, but saw nothing but a great expanse of glittering white for leagues around.

That night, and for several nights after, the two were forced to huddle together for warmth. It grew so cold, she feared the other dragon might leave her, but he stayed by her side, all the same. In fact, it had been his idea that they each choose what they would like to be called – a name. After much thought, she chose Polaris, for the stars that had hidden themselves on the night of her hatching. Her companion chose something much more primal: Beast. She had seen firsthand how vicious he could be when once they had been threatened on their journey by a Yeti from the mountains. It had been horrific.

It suited him.

On the second week of their journey, they took shelter one night beneath a massive, desiccated tree. It’s bark had whitened, and was beginning to peel away beneath the sharp blasts of icy wind in strips. It’s branches reached higher into the sky than Polaris could possibly imagine, but it was the roots that interested her – long, twisted, and poking high enough out of the frozen ground to provide some shelter from the wind.

Upon the morrow, however, Polaris remained still when Beast began making plans to move on.

“No,” she said. “This is what I’ve been looking for.”

He blinked, immobile. “This tree? This is it?” When she nodded, he went on, “But it’s dead.”

“It does not matter. But if it is time for you to depart, my dear friend, I send with you luck, and my love.”

He tilted his head, as, she had learned, he always did when thinking. Then, he said, “If this is where we stay, I suppose we should make something a bit more permanent.”

Together, they built lairs for one another, Polaris’ at the base of the mighty tree, Beast’s a little further away, so that he may watch over them. Once that was done, they began exploring, a little further each day, looking for where they might find food, water, and supplies. Digging for the lairs had led them to discover a multitude of artifacts as well; perhaps this tree, when it had been alive, had also been home to dragonkind.

Polaris had been surprised when the second Skydancer appeared outside of their lairs a few days later. A rune of nature glowed on his forehead, and his stare was disconcerting. “The Mother,” he said. He bowed his head. “I have been waiting for you.”

“I believe you may be mistaken,” Polaris replied. “I have no hatchlings here.”

“The Gladekeeper is never mistaken,” the Skydancer returned. “She only bestows truth.”

“And what truth does your Gladekeeper share?” Polaris asked.

“That you are the Mother, bringer of life and light where none should exist.”

“Now I am certain you have me mistaken for another,” Polaris smiled.

“Have you not noticed?”

Polaris followed his gaze, up into the pale branches of the tree. Three tiny leaves had sprouted on one of the branches overhead, and in the center, one tiny, pink bud.

“The Gladekeeper bids this humble dragon to share the news throughout all the flights, so that all of dragonkind may know of the Mother’s warmth and grace.” The Skydancer spread his great feathered wings, the green gems crusted to his scales glinting wildly. “I shall return.”

And so he did, with a veritable horde in tow several weeks later. Befuddled at all those who wished to make their homes in this frigid landscape just on the say so of this wild-eyed dragon and his supposed miracle, she nonetheless sought to make each and every dragon feel warm, protected, and loved, all beneath the once-dead tree.
