Biography

windtop.png

The entryway leading into the clan is relatively humble for its size - just a simple wall of bamboo with some carefully constructed ramparts. The doors attached to the stones on either side of the road look like they haven't been closed in ages - if at all. Beyond the doorway, however, the space opens into a beautiful array of ascending steppes, lush greenery, and rivulets of water cascading down the largest of the cliffs in a small waterfall. The dens beyond the common areas - a veritable town for its size - are carved into the rock face, which is marked with the foreclaw imprint of various dragons, all in unique pigments. The design is less organized than one would expect, and yet it somehow works for the jovial, vibrant atmosphere.

The square and surrounding area is bustling with residents. While the dragons pay the newcomer mind, it is normally a few curious but friendly looks and polite greetings rather than calls to arms. The chatter and calls of the clan fill the air with life and vigor.

A shadow flits over the ground before a nearby reed suddenly bends within eye level. Perched on the long, fragile bamboo is a fae with vibrant green eyes. His hide is a brilliant blue, with the fans and wings darkening to shadowy purple. Grey, smoky markings patterned over the darker ripples on his scales gives the impression of swirling water, like that in the nearby pond. Despite his size, there is an aura of respect from the surrounding dragons that tells far more of his status and history within the clan.

The fae scrutinizes the visitor, fans rippling with curiosity, before speaking in tones as bright as a monotone will allow. "Welcome, stranger. Irieora informed me that we might have guests. I'm Anaster, leader of the Fire Phoenix clan." His head tilts, wings opening in a gesture of friendliness. "Would you like us to set up a temporary den for your stay? You are quite welcome to remain for as long as you wish. We wouldn't think to leave someone in need out to fend for themselves. If you'd follow me, I can introduce you to the rest of the clan. Now, what wind brought you here?"

"It has a certain ring to it, doesn’t it? And… phoenixes always rise from their ashes. No matter where the wind blows them, they come back. Every one of us can always rise from the ashes of what we were, and become something new, something better. I want our clan to always remember that.”

tumblr_inline_o1qzm4xdui1ts73zp_400.png

The founder of the Fire Phoenix Clan, Anaster found himself alone at birth, born from a solitary egg within the Windswept Plateau. His lineage and surviving family are currently unknown, but he quickly learned how to survive in the shelter of the reeds in the wind realm as a hatchling. Anaster is smaller in size than most of the clan, even the other faes, but more than makes up for his bulk with spunk. Adventurous and strong-willed, he has always desired to make his mark within the Windsinger’s domain. Anaster is an easily excitable dragon, and can often be seen with his crest fanned out in anticipation and enthusiasm. Though he still speaks in a monotone like most of his species, these limits are often tested when a sense of adventure is in the air. He is quick-witted even in the face of danger, and delights in puzzles and riddles; it is not atypical for friends and strangers alike to be questioned with a new challenge upon meeting him. Despite his thirst for adventure, Anaster is diplomatic and fair, and carries an air of charisma and justice about him. As leader of the clan, the fae charges himself with leading most decisions on the fate of his territory, and oversees much of the activity within the group. Anaster additionally leads Team Alpha in coliseum battles, with Jadeite and Shyscale as his teammates. His combination of matching wraps and birdskull apparel marks him as the leader of the territory. Most dragons of the clan are inclined to accept his judgement without question, and his sharp mind often solves disputes before they culminate to more than words. He is loyal- almost to a fault- to all his companions, and cares deeply for every one of his friends. Anaster is particularly attached to his mate, Jadeite, and his two sons in the clan, Sho and Vyrek, all of whom he would gladly give everything away for their happiness. Always eager to make friends, he is a welcoming leader and accepts most dragons into the clan without qualm, even with his mate’s protests. However, this does not mean he is harmless; spending his hatchling years alone in the world has made Anaster a seasoned and capable fighter, and he will not hesitate to battle if he feels his family and clan is in danger. His manipulation of wind magic is almost unparalleled amongst his fellow clan-mates, and coupled with superb speed and control in flight, Anaster is a force to be reckoned with despite his size. He feels his greatest duty is the protection of his clan, and fulfills this obligation with iron determination.

“You have a fine mind, hatchling,” the voice proclaimed. A wing softly brushed the edge of the egg, which twitched almost imperceptibly, as though sensing a presence through the shell. “I can feel your magic even when you are just born.”
“Think it’ll survive?” the second onlooker asked gruffly.
“Yes,” was the reply. “The best chance out of all of them. It – he – will be fine on his own.”
There was a long, pregnant pause, and the egg was still. “We should go,” the second voice finally said. “We’ve spent too long.”
The egg moved again in the direction of the fading footsteps, more insistent this time. A snout gently bumped the surface of the shell, and it instantly stilled. “You cannot follow us, my dear. I am sorry.”
A rush of wings against air, and the egg was left alone in the swaying reeds.
“Farewell, my little Anaster. One day you will grow strong, and create a clan all your own.”

tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
The reeds shuffled and clattered together faintly, forming a trail across one of the many crags of the Windswept Plateau. After a moment, a small head poked out of the foliage, fans perked in attention. The male fae scanned the area quickly, nimble claws clinging tightly to the swaying reed as he clambered up the bamboo for a better view. With a true blue hide and shadowy-purple wings, the creature was a brilliant dot against the verdant green landscape.
Halfway through his search, the head stopped, and the crest expanded just slightly. The bamboo clattered loudly as the fae pushed off, wings fluttering for height. The tattered edges expertly caught the breeze, and the dragon sped off into the distance.
He landed without a sound at the edge of one of the steppes, flattening on his belly to creep cautiously towards the cave. It was a small cavern at best, a craggy opening in the jagged grey cliff leading to the next outcropping. However, there was space enough for several mid-sized dragons to lie comfortably within the fissure, and the floor was worn smooth with time. The walls themselves had several craggy crevasses perfect for smaller dragons to perch. The clearing outside the cave was open and friendly, with plenty of sunning rocks and lush grass. An encircling wall of tall reeds provided both shade and protection from the elements, and sheltered the area from aerial eyes. The steppe was cut off from the next by a small stream on one side, and dropped off to an enormous cliff on the other.
The fae slunk into the cave and sniffed the air, rearing up onto two legs to get a better feel of the cavern. No other scents greeted him, and he hummed in satisfaction. Jumping up onto one of the wall’s outcroppings, he spread his wings and gazed upon the view outside the cave, crest fanning out in excitement.
“This is it,” Anaster said to himself, brilliant spring green eyes sparkling in the midday sun. “It’s perfect! This will be where it all begins.”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
Anaster’s wings and crest trembled faintly as he focused on the magic energy around him, molding the nest to his desire. Tree sap was lacking in the Reedcleft Ascent, so he had to make do with what he had; some soft leaves he stripped off of the nearby brush and some crushed herbs that formed a sort of paste. Curing the layered nest took time, but he was pleased with the results.
After a moment, the tremors subsided, and the fae lifted his head to view his handiwork. He glanced down at his roommate – a potentially temporary one, given her ill temper with him. “You don’t have to sleep on a cold stone floor, you know.”
Jadeite snorted, her fins flattening against her head. “At least I’m large enough to carry all my materials in one trip.” She tilted her head slightly, indicating the wooden planks at the cave entrance. “Why do you want those, anyway?”
The fae quickly scampered off of the ledge and pulled one of the planks inside. Snatching a small stick with a tuft of fur tied to one end, Anaster grabbed the contraption in his right foreclaw and dipped it in ink. “I need to come up with a name for the clan.”
“A name?” The mirror blinked both sets of eyes. “Don’t you think that’s pretentious? You’re only one little fae in a big world. You don’t really have a lair.”
“I do. This,” he said, indicating the cave with a fan of his wings, “could be a lair, given enough time. I haven’t had a place to call home in… well… a long time, I suppose. It would be nice to settle down and have a clan of my own.”
“If you can keep it,” Jadeite pointed out, pale green eyes narrowing, “You don’t have the strength or numbers yet to keep it safe.”
“…Yeah. Not yet,” he amended quietly, brush poised over the plank. “But someday… maybe it will be.” There was a long, awkward pause before Anaster spoke up again. “By the way, I came up with another riddle today. Want to hear it?”
“No.”
“What is contained in a prison, yet has never committed a crime…”
Jadeite groaned and turned away. “You’re impossible.”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
The crackle of broken bamboo alerted Anaster to the intrusion only a few moments before the attack. Scrambling out of his nest, he saw Jadeite already awake and snarling, eyes flashing even in the pitch darkness.
Shrieking in challenge, the Longnecks quickly invaded the clearing, spears and staffs held high. There were at least a dozen of them, but Anaster didn’t have time to count; they were already at the cave mouth, and he wasn’t going to let them get any further. Jadeite leapt upon the first two that dared cross the threshold, talons and teeth bared. However, she was quickly swarmed by the other groups, too outnumbered to put up a decent fight.
Anaster dropped down from the outcropping, hovering just above the heads of his adversaries. He was far too tiny to put up much of a physical fight – even the smallest Longneck easily dwarfed him – but he had to do something. Rearing his head back, the tiny fae took a deep inhale.
Jadeite, noticing him in the line of fire, knocked away a thrown spear and shouted, “Don’t! You’re going to-!”
The blast of wind that erupted from the dragon’s mouth caught at least half a dozen of the Longnecks and sent them flying, crying out in surprise. The bolt sent Anaster tumbling backwards with the force of the wind, but he quickly recovered, swooping in after his adversaries. Before they could recover he was on them again, blasting shots of wind with pinpoint accuracy, magic warping around his frame as the elements bent to his will. Several Longnecks were sent flying backwards and over the cliff; others retreated with howls of anger and defeat.
The blue fae twisted around to the cavern, hissing in defiance, crest flattened in fury. Jadeite threw the last Longneck bodily from the cave, whereupon it scrambled away and vanished into the night.
For a few long moments, the silence was only broken by chirping crickets. “Wow,” Anaster finally breathed. “I don’t think I’ve ever thrown a bolt that big before.”
Jadeite only stared.
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
"Go back to your mother and father, where you belong! At least you have some!”
Jadeite regretted the words the moment they were spoken, but there was no way to take them back now. Anaster’s eyes went round for a moment, crest lifted as high as possible, before beginning to shrink on himself. The fins flattened, then drooped, and the small dragon appeared to be rendered even smaller as his wings closed tight.
Jadeite opened her mouth to amend her words, but before she could, the fae slipped past her without a word and disappeared into the tall grass just beyond the cave. She watched him go, fins lowered, then sighed and turned away from the cavern mouth, tail tucked around her.
The sun rose, then set, and still no sign of Anaster. Jadeite eventually moved to lie at the entrance to await his return, head between her paws, eyes half lidded. When the moon finally rose above the reeds, she sighed and stood, leaping off of the ledge with barely a sound. She tasted the air, and then sniffed deeply. The scent was faint, but it was there, and she tracked the owner with unerring accuracy.
She didn’t have to look far. Anaster was three small steppes away, perched on a tiny jutting rock that peeked just above the tall grass. He didn’t look away from his observation of the stars as Jadeite approached, but a twitch of his crest indicated he was aware of her presence. She sat in the grass beside him; their heads were level with one another.
There was a long pause before Jadeite decided to speak. “I’m sorry.”
Anaster didn’t respond for a while. “I … never knew my parents,” he finally said, “but they were there, at some point, when I was still in the egg. They’re only a shadow of a memory now.” He turned his head just far enough to glance at Jadeite. “You think you were the only one left alone in this world?”
Jadeite focused her gaze on her paws, shuffling uncertainly. Anaster’s monotone was eerily out of place under the circumstances. “So… you didn’t have a home at all, then.”
“I wandered from place to place, but I didn’t expect to be taken in by anyone. Someone told me I would be a great leader someday, and I decided to look for a place of my own.” Anaster sighed quietly. “I didn’t expect you to know.”
“Listen,” Jadeite started, but she was cut off again by her comrade.
“We all have our own secrets to keep, don’t we?” The fae turned to look at her, blue hide speckled in silver moonlight. “There was no harm done.”
They sat together for a long while, simply basking in each other’s presence. When Jadeite finally stood and turned to leave, she paused for a second. “It’s a hatchling,” she said plainly.
“Hm?” Anaster responded, head tilted in interest.
“The riddle you told me. That was the answer.”
His chuckle was faint, and he nodded slightly. After a short silence, he added, “Want to hear another one?”
She snorted loudly. “No.”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
"Congratulations! You’re the first official member of the Fire Phoenix clan!” Anaster’s voice was as cheerful as his monotone would allow, and his crest was fully open and vibrating in glee. Jadeite gently placed her inked paw on the outside of the cave, watching curiously as the pigment dried in the light of the sun.
“Why the Fire Phoenix clan?” she asked, wiping her paw on the grass. “We’re not a fire clan, you know. Phoenixes don’t even cross over the Windswept Plateau.”
Anaster looked thoughtful. “It has a certain ring to it, doesn’t it?” he said. “And… phoenixes always rise from their ashes. No matter where the wind blows them, they come back.” He looked at Jadeite with unblinking spring green eyes. “Every one of us can always rise from the ashes of what we were, and become something new, something better. I want our clan to always remember that.”
Jadeite was silent as the fae placed his paw in black ink and pressed it against the stone wall, right next to her own, which had been patterned with muckbottom shell pigment. As they stared at the prints, Anaster suddenly chuckled. “That sounded weird, didn’t it?”
“No,” Jadeite responded, “just sickeningly sappy.”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
Anaster watched the hatchlings tumble around in the dust as he sat on his usual perch at the mouth of the cave. Jadeite trotted in with several dead lizards clenched between her teeth. The blue fae watched the mirror as she dropped the pile on top of their stores, then leapt to the ledge underneath him. “The clan’s gotten much bigger now,” he observed.
Jadeite followed his line of sight as Tenobia tackled Zenthra, and both hatchlings rolled on the ground in mock battle. “Yeah,” was her only response.
“With Shyscale and the others here, we’re more of a force to be reckoned with,” the fae reasoned. “The Longnecks and other creatures hardly bother us anymore, and the territorial battles have been easier.”
“Until someone bigger comes along,” Jadeite retorted, and then sighed. “But… it’s a start.”
“Yes,” Anaster said, smiling faintly, “a real start indeed.”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
Anaster nosed each of the shells gently, gazing with wonder at the patterned surface. “They’re not going to hatch today, you know,” Jadeite sighed, “it’s only been one day.”
The small fae jumped almost guiltily. “I know,” he admitted, “but… it’s just so exciting, isn’t it? The first children to be clan-born…”
His mate smiled faintly. “Born and raised,” she corrected, drawing her tail around the three eggs at her side.
Anaster placed a paw on one of them, and suddenly seemed quiet. Jadeite tilted her head in question. “Do you think… I’ll make a good father?” he finally asked, surprisingly tentative.
Jadeite paused before nudging him with her snout. “Phoenixes, right? We learn from our past. We aren’t going to be our parents, and we certainly aren’t going to leave them behind.”
The blue fae smiled. “You’re right.”
One of the eggs made a faint noise, and Anaster hummed happily, nudging it gently. “You’re going to be a strong one – I can feel your life force already, little guy. How about a good riddle to calm you down?" He curled himself around the egg, reciting, "What has both the colors of the sun and moon…”
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
"Do you think they’ll be permanent?”
Jadeite leaned down and studied the markings along Anaster’s flank. The true blue hide was now patterned with a series of darker lines that trailed from the crest down to his flanks. A spatter of interconnected markings made the entire effect look like ripples in a pond. The shadowed wings were similarly patterned, with lines radiating out from the point of the wings to the trailing edges. However, the most striking change was the appearance of sterling grey markings along Anaster’s entire body. They twisted and swirled in between the new patterns, creating the appearance of a foggy midmorning breeze.
The brown mirror shrugged. “Some dragons don’t get their true markings until well after they’ve become adults. This is probably one of those cases.”
Anaster fanned his wings experimentally, studying the markings. “How do they look?”
Jadeite studied him carefully before choosing her next sentence. “They make you look old.”
His crest flattened indignantly. “What, no!” He turned to the other spectators. “What do you two think?”
Sho shuffled on his paws and fixed his gaze on the floor, looking extremely guilty; however, Vyrek was frantically trying to contain his laughter behind his forepaws.
“Geez,” Anaster sighed, but he smiled faintly at his two sons.
tumblr_inline_o1r0k5ochW1ts73zp_75sq.png
"This is it,” Anaster announced, fluttering up above the rest of the clan, “our new home!”
Across the next crevasse cutting through the Reedcleft Ascent was another, larger steppe. It looked almost the same as the old cavern – reeds growing on all sides, an opening carved into the cliffside, a lush, green, open clearing with plenty of space to frolic and catch sun. However, the cavern was larger, wider, and more spacious, with a few fledgling tunnels leading to smaller caverns. The tunnels wound upwards and inwards, creating a multi-tiered lair that could be accessed from smaller entrances within the rock face. A pool of water bubbled up in the center of the clearing, and the fresh water trickled down a creek that turned into a glistening waterfall at the edge of the steppe. The reeds were taller, thicker, and more mature, creating a secure wall around the area, bending slightly into the clearing to provide shade and protection.
Jadeite lifted her head and tasted the air. “This is good,” she remarked in approval. “No sign of any other dragons here, either.”
“There’s plenty of space to grow, too,” added Eune as she looked around the field.
“Hatchling-proofing the place is going to be a pain,” grumbled Rumu, but with a glance from his fellows, he conceded, “it does seem like a nice place to raise a nest.”
“The cave could be excavated more for our convenience,” Zenthra mused, “and there can be smaller caves for nests and hoards.”
The dragons leapt across the gap in groups, exploring their new home with a sense of wonder. Anaster sighed and landed on Jadeite’s back. “This could work,” he concluded with a sense of pride.
“We’re going to need a banner to mark this spot as our own!” Kaj called as he looped around the cave entrance.
Dymura paused and looked up at the cliff face. “… I think I have an idea,” she said in answer, smiling faintly.
Anaster looked down at Jadeite hopefully. “Did we remember…”
Faillon laughed as he walked up from behind them. “Way ahead of you,” he replied, sliding a palette of pigments in front of them with his tail. The rest of the group immediately stopped their exploration and gathered around, dipping their paws into their favorite ink and limping towards the cave mouth.
Anaster placed his paw into the black ink, crest fully fanned. “Shall we?” he invited.
Jadeite smiled and placed a dollop of muckbottom shell pigment on her foreclaw. “Let’s,” she confirmed.
Together, the entire assembly made their way to the rock face, planting their colored paws against the rocky cliff. Some took flight to place theirs higher on the face, bickering over their favorite and choice locations. Anaster smiled and alighted on a narrow ledge at the cavern mouth, placing his black paw print against the cool stone.
This is our clan now.
