Speaker for the Dead "Quote" Tinsel tells the stories of those dragons who leave the living world to join the Shadowbinder in perpetual service. The departed dragons speak through her mate, Nebula, and she immortalizes their lives in the medium she sees fit--be it through words, song, or other arts. Night in the Tangled Woods falls dark and silent, a chill in the air even in the summer. Beneath the thorns of the Bramble a garden grows, tended by inexplicable wildclaws and harboring the whispers of dangerous things. Should a dragon wish to seek it out, the best advice for the journey comes from the Stellaria. The stargazers inherited the eyes of galaxies: their vision blessed with a deep connection to the hidden things of the world. "If you are careful--" "Lucky." "You will find the black garden and the Foxfire." Coma's voice fills the space: clear bright starlight given sound. Her scales shimmer bone white and pink in the firelight; wings black with the night behind them reflect fire off their polished edges. Flowers seem to grow in them luminescent blue and climbing up to the pink latticework cresting her wingtips. "She's a myth," Pleiades murmurs. "The Foxfire is a shadow out of the corner of your eye. You are far more likely to find the trickster." "Still." Tinsel came for answers. "Will you help me or not? I won’t bring you any more stories if you're just going to play games." The sisters smile in eerie unison. "Speaker for the Dead." Pleiades singsongs Tinsel's title, drawls, "Such an empty threat. Don't pretend you don't love telling us their stories." Tinsel blows out an exasperated huff and turns to Coma who watches quietly, mouth upturned in amusement. "Look for glowshrooms at the bases of trees. They're planted in paths that lead out from the garden's center." Gazing at Tinsel upside down from where she rolled to her back, Pleiades adds, "Your Foxfire glows in their light." The crackling fire warms the colors in the butterfly scales of her wings. "Tell us her story if you find her," Pleiades calls as Tinsel retreats from their warm lair into the dark beneath the briers. "She's not dead." A spoken truth meant to convince herself. "You don't belong here, little Nocturne." A purr in the darkness, close enough that Tinsel thinks she can feel the words on the breeze. Tinsel's silks brush lightly across her wings, caught in the drift of phantom motion. Someone else’s feathers rustle and laughter echoes through the brambles, a cold sound hidden between thorns. "Come away. I know the path home." "Trickster," Tinsel whispers. The dragon laughs again, moving close enough for Tinsel to see. The coatl gleams in crystal. Metal. A belly full of gold. Upon her head sit antlers black as the brambles above. An unsettling filigree plates whorls in curves over her face and body. "You flatter me." She preens with feathered wings lifted, looming over Tinsel. "Do you have time?" "Time?" "For a trick, naturally." "I didn't come here for that." "Oh, come now." It sounds like a threat as the trickster prowls in a graceful circle around her. "How do I find the Foxfire?" With a put-upon sigh, resigned, "She's there between the trees. Do you see? That brightness like a ghost?” The trickster points to a distant wisp of light.” A spirit with wings that ignite the darkness. If you catch her, she'll grant you a wish." She’s not dead. There are no phantoms with untold stories here. She’s a myth. Yet, here is Tinsel, assuring herself that the rumors were just that. But if she is dead after all… She’ll need the Foxfire's story. So she runs. "You won't of course," the trickster warns TInsel as she lets her escape. Muses to herself, "But if you did."
Tinsel
...as the clan grew many of Shorbet's dragons grew discontent with their loss of individual identities within the clan's structure. Whispers passsed through them of a haven for stray dragons, one where all were valued for their individual strengths and given the support and grace to discover them. They loved their family, loved Shorbet, but they longed to be more. One by one the restless dragons began to depart in search of it. Most abandoned the search to be taken in by the clans of other gods and their fates remain unknown to Shorbet. Those who persisted in their quest found their home in the Foxfire Bramble...
