The One Who Guards The Gate.

Gate used to be an ordinary dragon, just like any other. A dragon with emotions, thoughts, memories. A dragon with a life.

It started on a night flight between stony mountains. He heard chanting, cackling, shouting, singing, wailing, screaming, moaning.

Curiosity killed the dragon.

He swerved off, interested in the horrible sounds. He used trees for cover, and when he looked in, he gasped; iron cages loomed above the earth. Inside, there where cowering dragons. He staggered back, sickened, and though he tried to get away, it was too late.

They spotted him.

No dragons could have that expression; the eyes seemed to be pools of darkness, their faces twisted into cruelty that the dragon thought wasn't possible. Their claws where sharp and blackened.

They caught him, shoved him behind bars, laughing, cackling, growling. The dragon couldn't escape, couldn't leave the prison.

After a while, he forgot his name, forgot his life. He stopped thinking, stopped feeling, stop caring.

But they gave him a new name, a new purpose.

The One Who Guards The Gate.

They brought him to a gate; a gateway to another world. His new job was to protect it, to make sure no one went through it. He never wondered where it went, or why he had to guard it. He just protected it, never thinking to uncover the demons that lay within.

Until a dragon dressed in darkness came, eyes red and gleaming.

"Tell me," he said. "Tell me why you guard The Gate." When Gate didn't reply, he added, "You don't have to, you know. You're the one who chooses your life, not them."

He broke the spell.

And then he left, never to be seen again.

The One Who Guards The Gate began to think for himself. It started in small surges. Typically, he wondered why he was guarding the gate.

Then he began to think more and more, until eventually he realized that he was a dragon. A living dragon, not a robot built to be a slave.

So he left.

He ran far away before they could catch him. They never caught him.

He often wondered if they even tried.

He didn't know where he was, or who he was, or how he had gotten into the imprisonment in the first place. He just knew he was free.

He fled farther and farther away, until he somehow reached The Moonlight Caverns, and was welcomed in by Clay.

When Clay asked his name, The One Who Guards The Gate didn't say anything for a few moments. He didn't remember his name, but he wasn't about to tell that to a stranger. So he said the only thing he could think of, the closest he had to a name.

"My name is Gate," he finally said.

Familiar: Snow, the Rambra
Nicknames: None
Mate: None
Hatchlings: None
Friends: Clay. He was the one who took Gate in and gave him another life, another chance.

Flamesoul as well, as she welcomed him warmly into her clan.

Frozen, who always seems to be a wise soul in a sea of insanity.

Fate, because she always accepts him, and has a sad backstory like Gate.
Enemies: The dragons with twisted claws who trapped him.

Gerathon and her friend, Icicle, because they remind him of the ones who trapped him, with eyes full of hate. He knows they're evil, ruthless, and worse yet, they took over his Clan.

Personality: Naturally, Gate is still affected by his time enslaved and is distant, always seeming to focus on something far away, as if he's still haunted by the nightmares he endured.
Many dragons see Gate as unsympathetic, which, in a way, is true - it's just that he doesn't know how to be sympathetic. Sympathy is something he didn't know for a long time, because of how he spent many years of his life away from dragonkind.

Gate is also tough, and doesn't seem to care what others think of him.

Many would call Gate uncaring. He seems to brush off other dragon's opinions, and, on the rare occasions he does speak, he seems to be blunt and careless about other dragon's emotions and thoughts.
