“Once upon a time” his mother began. Yuuri settled beside his sister as the hatchlings readied themselves for another of their mother’s stories. She always told the best tales but Yuuri’s favorites were the ones about an ancient Faerie Kingdom and the etherial beings who resided there. “Someday” he told his mother, “I’ll find out where the Faeries are”. She stared down at her son with a smile, “I’m sure you will”.

Yuuri spent his childhood lost in daydreams about the Faerie Kingdom. “The fairies love to dance” his mother had said in one of her stories. “Their ballroom floors are frozen over and polished so that they can dance on the ice. Did you know that they used to teach dragons how to dance before they disappeared?” Yuuri’s eyes widened. “I’m going to become the best dancer so that I can impress the fairies when I finally meet them!”

When their mother finally allowed the hatchlings to leave the nest, ice was the first thing that Yuuri wanted to see. The Starfall Isles were close enough to the Southern Icefields that most of the lakes froze over during the winter. Yuuri scampered towards the shimmering ice before curiously tapping it with a claw. He followed his mother onto the frozen surface; his legs splaying out awkwardly as he slipped and slid. Their mother laughed at the two hatchlings as they tried to get their feet to stay underneath them. “You make it look so easy!” Yuuri’s sister shouted at their mother.

Yuuri went to the lake every day. He quickly learned how to glide elegantly across the frozen surface and often came home with scrapes and bruises from the jumps and flips that he attempted. He tried to replicate the fairy dances his mother spoke of in her stories, but without a teacher, Yuuri had no idea what he was doing. One day while he was practicing, Yuuri noticed something in the distance. It was. . a bear? Hibernal Starbears were elusive creatures and Yuuri had only seen one once. He’d heard there was a blue variant that was even rarer. . But this bear didn’t look like the guardian species of the Starfall Isles. A moment later, the mysterious blue bear was gone.

“Ah” Yuuri's mother said when he returned to the lair, “you must have seen a Polarfreeze Defender. They’re quite rare in these parts but sometimes the ice floes carry them into our territories”. Yuuri felt like he had heard about these creatures before. “Are those the same bears that the fairies would keep?” he asked curiously. His mother laughed, “I did talk about them in my stories. They are difficult to tame, but they were among the preferred companions of fairies when they still walked this realm. The Defenders can freeze surfaces upon contact and the fairies used them to prepare the ice before their performances”. Yuuri felt lucky he had the chance to see one of the magnificent bears, even if it was from a distance.

A few days later, Yuuri awoke to a warm tongue displacing the feathers on the side of his face and coating them in a sticky layer of saliva. “Wha-eew” he screeched before looking up at an enormous pink bear. “Good morning Yuuri” his father exclaimed, “I’m not a natural at using Arcane magic, but your mother and I managed to pull up a few shards of Morganite to create him. What do you think?” Yuuri laughed as the bear continued to lick his face “aah, he’s perfect.”

Yuuri named the bear Viktor and allowed the familiar to follow him everywhere. When Viktor touched the ice, its surface became smooth and polished. The bear also moved effortlessly across the frozen lake and Yuri began to watch how he moved; pivoting and turning by digging his claws into the ice and subtly shifting his weight. Yuuri’s own turns and movements became more refined as he observed and copied the bear, but it still wasn’t enough to help his jumps.

At night, Yuuri slept curled between the bear’s front paws and one night he was awakened by a low growl. “Huh, Viktor? What’s wrong?” he asked the bear who was staring out towards the lake. The bear got up slowly and walked out of the lair. “Where are you going?” Yuuri called after his familiar as he followed the bear out of the lair and down towards the lake. Yuuri didn't often go outside at night, but the Starwood Strand glowed in the moonlight and pulsed with Arcane magic. It was mesmerizing looking up at the stars and Yuuri nearly bumped into the back of his familiar who had finally stopped moving and was now staring at the lake. “Wha-“ Yuuri began before seeing another dragon on the lake and immediately quieting. It was a Wildclaw who glided effortlessly across the ice and almost appeared to make music with his movements. Yuuri watched as the Wildclaw built up speed and gracefully lifted himself from the ice before twirling in the air and landing with a slight click of his claws against the frozen surface.

After that, Yuuri snuck out nightly to watch the mysterious dragon dance across the ice. Sometimes he wondered if he was simply dreaming, but he never dared approach the Wildclaw. He did, however, attempt to replicate everything he saw and the first time he successfully landed after jumping from the ice, Yuuri squeaked with glee. He improved rapidly after watching the mysterious dragon each night. Then a night came when the Wildclaw didn’t appear. Yuuri rushed towards the lake and sighed with disappointment when he saw that the space was empty. He turned to go home when Viktor nudged his arm and grumbled before walking towards the lake and touching his nose to the frozen surface. The bear always knew what Yuuri needed to cheer up and he quickly followed his familiar’s lead.

The night sky was beautiful and Yuuri got lost in the trance induced by the Starwood Strand. He could almost hear music as he danced across the ice; eyes closed in concentration. Then he heard his familiar whining. . Warning him? What? He opened his eyes to realize that he was standing over the deepest part of the lake. He barely had time to process the sound of cracking before he felt the ice give way beneath him and he fell into the frigid water. He flailed frantically, but he was already trapped under the sheet of ice overhead and he couldn’t see the opening he had fallen through in the darkness. He was sinking and he couldn’t hold his breath any longer. He saw a dark shadow moving across the ice overhead as he finally let himself inhale; the cold water rushing into his lungs. It was peaceful now and Yuuri closed his eyes.

He woke up coughing, gasping for breath before he saw the electric blue eyes staring down at him. “Ah! You’re alive!” an unfamiliar voice spoke. “Hm. . Viktor?” the Coatl called weakly as he felt a bear’s tongue brush over his feathers. “Huh, how do you know my name?!” the unfamiliar voice exclaimed, but Yuuri was too tired to respond and drifted back to sleep. When he woke up again, an unfamiliar blue bear was staring down at Yuuri. “You’re not Viktor” he said with a laugh as the bear licked his face again. “Oh, you’re finally awake” the same unfamiliar voice said from somewhere behind the bear. Yuuri sprung up from the pile of furs he was laying on when he saw the other dragon. “Yo-you’re real?!” he screeched in an excited but hoarse voice. “Ah! Calm down, you nearly drowned!” the Wildclaw responded with a slight smile.

Yuuri stayed with the mysterious Wildclaw for a few days while he recovered. He couldn't believe that the dragon shared the same name as his bear. He also couldn’t help but blush every time he looked at the other dragon. “You dance like a fairy. Where did you learn how to dance like that?” the Wildclaw asked him one day. “I um. . Well, my bear. . “ Yuuri muttered with a flustered look on his face. “You learned all of that. . . by watching a bear?” the dragon asked him in disbelief. “Well. . I may have also. .” Yuuri mumbled, “I may have also picked up a bit by watching you. . . I know it sounds silly, but I wanted to impress the fairies when I finally met them. I know they’re real.” The Coatl’s face was flushed with a pink hue as he averted his gaze from the Wildclaw. There was a moment of awkward silence before the other dragon began laughing. “Consider me impressed."
