BACKGROUND

The grandchild of Isa and Orion, the clan's two best killers, Sapphire was found by chance wandering in the Starwood Strand. When she was led back to the clan by a little wisp of mist, she found herself accepted by the clan and allowed to choose her own name. Sapphires had always been her favorite gem, so Sapphire she became. While still in the hatchery, Sapphire found herself being constantly followed by a white dragon with red wings – Cinder. She was reluctant to tell Cinder to back off, as she didn't want to hurt the other's feelings, but eventually got so annoyed that she was forced to do it. After a few days of bickering, their personalities snapped together and they settled into a comfortable relationship of best friends. And over time, as Cinder gathered Breeze and Dahlia around her also, Sapphire learned to be friends with those two dragons also – though her first loyalty will always be towards Cinder.

Sapphire has always been fantastic at logistics and coordination, but that really came to the fore when the Battle of the Bay came upon Wind and Arcane. The clan was thrown into disarray as dragons left to serve the Arcanist on the front lines, the clan size shrinking almost by half and tensions rising high. When Cinder stepped forward as a leader, Sapphire was right there, perched on her best friend's shoulder and eager to help reform the clan. Sapphire was instrumental in the logistics of creating new clan divisions and refocusing efforts on profit – both from sending dragons to the Arcanist and from trading with other clans in magical research and in magical artifacts.

For quite a while, Sapphire whispered in Cinder's ear and helped her best friend lead. But then Cinder visited a fortune-teller who told her things had to change within the clan. Sapphire was skeptical about this, but even as they discussed the implications, a horrifying scream came from the clan lair. Sapphire and Cinder came back to find Seramore uttering dread prophecy, darkness shrouding the stars they all loved, and panic descending over the clan.

Sapphire could do nothing against Cinder's sheer determination. She watched helplessly as Cinder tore down all they'd worked for, creating a council in place of her absolute rule, and clutched Cinder's crest against the wind as the clan moved to Lightning just before disaster struck their old home. She doesn't like anything about this – how Cinder will no longer listen to her as she once did, how the thunder and lightning are always crackling overhead, the new focus of the clan on science rather than magic. But, she supposes, so long as Cinder is here with her, they'll be alright.

PERSONALITY

Sapphire is often quiet at first sight, preferring to perch on Cinder and watch proceedings rather than insert herself into them. However, she can be assertive when the need arises, and argues down her opponents with cold logic and facts. She loves hoarding knowledge and has the largest collection of books in the clan. She's also not above working in the dark when necessary – using whatever tools are at her disposal to accomplish her goals. For this reason, she makes a perfect second-in-command to Cinder.

Anxiety is Sapphire's biggest enemy. Whenever something deviates from its planned course, or whenever something is just a tad not right, Sapphire will try to fix it, which usually ends up in it being pushed further away from the plan and Sapphire having a panic attack. Her anxiety also comes when she's flying high or when it's cold outside – the first because of a fear of heights, the second because of no particular reason. Cinder has learned to calm her down by tucking Sapphire under her wing and reading aloud in a soothing voice for hours on end.

PET PROJECT

Sapphire's biggest concern right now is making sure she doesn't lose her best friend. Despite their admittedly rocky start, Cinder means everything to Sapphire. If she lost Cinder's support and love... Sapphire isn't quite sure what she'd do. She's dearly hoping it doesn't come to that.

Beyond her concerns about Cinder, Sapphire's pet project will always be whatever Cinder is working on. And, since Cinder is currently welding together a clan torn from their home, Sapphire will throw herself whole-heartedly into that project.

RELATIONSHIPS

Cinder is Sapphire's best friend. They have long discussions about academia and what direction to lead the clan in, and Sapphire wouldn't give her up for the world.

Breeze has a rather give-and-take relationship with Sapphire. She always goes to Breeze for emotional advice.

Dahlia and Sapphire have a rather strained relationship. They get along best when working on a project, and smooth things over between themselves with debate about books.
