He emerged a more powerful mage than any could have ever dreamed of. His mother planned it that way. His only match was his brother, who was only his superior by a small margin. But that margin alone is what determined their fates.

Their hatching was not out of love, but a planned union of power that could create a weapon for use, and an heir for emergency. That mantle was given to his brother. He, on the other hand, was of little use to his mother. He was given freedoms from early on, and would not be held back if inclined to leave for some other clan, some other purpose. But the blood flowing through his veins ensured that he would have a home here, and a family to love him eternally. He was the grandson of the Clan Leader, of course. That was his only birthright.

But that alone was more valuable than most could claim to gain in their lifetimes.
