Iolite and her partner Cetineite work together to create beautiful silks to trade as they roam across Sornieth with Snastle. The clan’s silkworm farmer, Prehnite, collects all the precious silken cocoons shed by her worms as they turn into moths. Cetineite takes the golden orbs and carefully unwinds the silk, spinning it into delicate silk thread. After many skeins of thread are complete they are dyed, before Cetineite weaves them together to create her beautiful, shimmering silk cloth. The dyeing process is where Iolite becomes involved. She spends many hours poring over her workbench. On the walls, rows and rows of glass jars are securely clipped into racks, each filled with colorful and bizarre contents such as dried plants, powdered roots, ochre and beetle carapaces. She is often found grinding up combinations of pigment in her mortar and pestle, or fiddling with a bubbling pot of ingredients. When she isn’t tweaking her dye concoctions, Iolite can usually be found toiling over vats of dye, working the thread or fabric submerged within. Spending so much time working with dye tinted her hide in strange colors, and liking the effect, she developed her own dye which she applied in pleasing patterns all over her body, forming almost permanent markings similar to tattoos. She also dyed her friend and co-worker, Prehnite. Iolite is considered a rather eclectic dragon by some, and to be truthful she rather likes that. She has always seen things slightly differently to others – her synaesthesia allows her to visualize the voices of dragons around her as a series of colors. She is passionate and creative, and loves music just as much as she loves working with colors, since the two really are one and the same in her mind. As she works she sings to herself, often making up tunes as she goes. The music evokes colors in her mind, and she uses a rainbow of dyes to transfer those songs onto the silk, creating beautiful patterns and striking colors. Although she loves to create her own works by dyeing whole bolts of woven silk, she also dyes individual skeins of thread, so that Cetineite can use the colors to create works of her own. Iolite and Cetineite moved to Clan Snastle after visiting the small bath-house within for a romantic getaway together. The dragon in charge of the baths, Chrysocolla, introduced them to Prehnite, who kept silkworms for the passion of doing so, only selling enough of their cocoons to make a comfortable living. Her storage baskets overflowing with unprocessed silk had Cetineite’s eyes glinting, and the dragons soon struck up a lucrative working agreement and a fast friendship. |
