Biography

Job: Alchemist

Truth be told, Luminous's career has been dictated rather a lot by chance. It was chance, after all, that Gleam, the mostly blind and deaf previous head alchemist, wandered into the wood without an escort and was never seen again. It was chance, after all, that she was born only a few weeks before Gleam disappeared for good. It was chance, after all, that she was just old enough to be apprenticed to Auroro, the new alchemist, the moment he started his search for a protege.

But it's not as if chance has been a bad thing in her life, and she's taken everything in stride. Gleam's disappearance was saddening, yes (mostly because she lost her favorite target for the question "why?"), but it opened up an opportunity that she threw herself into headlong. Auroro was the perfect match to guide her inquisitive nature, and his particular skill set suited Luminous's penchant for experimentation. She had no qualms about the messy aspects of alchemy, and Auroro seemed to be especially relieved that his new apprentice was so eager to learn despite the less than ideal parts of the job.

Of course, they both learned that Luminous hated clean-up just as much as Auroro found it positively necessary, which caused an undue amount of friction. Luminous would have rather continued experiments endlessly, while her mentor insisted on tidying the lab in between alchemical feats. In the years since the beginning of their partnership, this point has been much improved upon, but there are still times when Luminous clearly resents the very idea of mopping up her mess just yet.

Beyond that single struggle, though, mentor and apprentice have gotten along wonderfully well, and in some cases, Luminous has perhaps even surpassed Auroro. She is incredibly bright, and more than once, she has come to conclusions that have persistently evaded Auroro for weeks at a time. But that intelligence combined with her curiosity has also made for some rather interesting results. Her first solo experiment comes to mind, especially since its results have never quite faded.

She was working alone in the lab that evening against Auroro's orders, testing out the heat resistance properties of a new solution while her mentor took the night off to spend time with a dear friend from another clan over. It had been going swimmingly until someone came by to ask for a simple tonic from Auroro. Luminous, distracted, prepared the tonic, but in the process, accidentally mixed the ingredients into the unstable solution she was studying. When her customer left and she returned to the solution, the slight motion of just picking up the beaker set the whole thing aflame. Had she not been wearing her protective eye-wear, she might have blinded herself. As it was, she choked on the smoke for a while, and the fire fizzled out on its own within the beaker, slowly burning down until there was nothing but a blackened lump of sludge left in the bottom of the glass.

There were no ill effects at first beyond the coughing as the smoke cleared, and Luminous was able to clean up before Auroro returned. He was none the wiser at first. Then the changes began, though, and she was forced to tell him the truth. Black scales crept up over her face and right side, as well as her left leg, and little blue fires erupted in the membrane of her right wing. They gave off a faint light but no heat, and were impossible to hide from the senior alchemist, who interrogated Luminous as soon as he saw the results of her experimentation.

Ultimately, Auroro and Luminous agreed that there had been no real harm done beyond cosmetic damage, but Luminous faced more backlash simply for defying safety protocols and working without her mentor to guide her. She has learned from that for the most part, and now conducts her experiments only with Clan Dark-Blood's finest alchemists. Usually, this is Auroro, but in cases that Auroro would not approve of, she sometimes seeks the advice of Alphys or Bumble instead. Additionally, when it comes to studying the fires that have come to life in her wings, she has broken most of the rules completely. They belong to her and her alone, and she is reluctant to share her slim findings with anyone else, even her mentor. If she is going to be an object of study, she has resolved to be her own researcher, and to come to her own conclusions. Alas, those conclusions have been sparse, as the fires are incredibly mysterious and elusive in nature. Perhaps she must become a better alchemist to truly understand them, something she has had her sights set on anyways. Soon she will surpass even Auroro in knowledge and talent, provided she sticks to her studies. It's very likely that she will break into the role of master alchemist soon, and maybe then she will finally have the knowledge to understand what she has done to herself.

After Auroro departed on a search of new studies in other clans, Luminous became the lead Alchemist of the clan.
