When Elena first came to the Caravan she accidentally fell in with the Whistle Reeds. How someone ‘accidentally’ falls in with a group of pirates is a great mystery but it did happen. Something about a treasure map and her being able to read some ancient runes no one else was able to decipher, to the annoyance of their resident know-it-all about ancient things Nathan, and a great treasure that turned out to be cursed and a run in with things no one will talk about but when you look into the pirate’s eyes after you ask them the unspoken terror of ‘Shade’ is all too obvious. She had quite an adventurous time with the Whistle Reeds before getting the hell away from that and to make a point to them that she didn’t want to be involved with them anymore she joined the Windborne.

Elena is a good fighter but she’s more brain than brawn which attracted the attention of the Second Lieutenant and commander of the Flower Guard, Sarah. Sarah invited her to join the Flower Guard and Elena wasn’t crazy enough to say no. The Flower Guard is one of the best, most respected, and strongest garrisons in the entire Windborne and when she became a member she became a bit more exalted than other guards. She liked the attention and proudly wove flowers into her mane and armor so everyone would know her greater status.

During the Rhodes civil war Elena proved herself in outsmarting more than once but it was her outright bravery in the face of adversaries that made her well known. While not blinded by her bravery Elena is known a bit for her recklessness to just jump head first into something. Usually this is because what’s going on is wrong and she can’t stand the injustice of it. She is well liked by others in the Flower Guard and generally spoken well of for her abilities.

Recently the old Commander, who Elena had never met personally, stepped down from the position to promote the former singular First Lieutenant. This left a power void in the Windborne and the new Commander Saturn started the process of finding her own seconds in command. At the time Elena was out dealing with Crumbled who’d infringed on Caravan territory looking to make trouble. Through her own clever thinking and a little heroism all around Elena was able to completely obliterate the Crumbled camp with her fellow Flower Guard and not lose a single dragon. Word got up to Saturn and she decided to meet with Elena. After proving herself to Saturn in person Saturn decided to give her a try and appointed her to the rank of First Lieutenant.

Elena doesn’t think she’s up for the task and feels a bit like she’s sort of a traitor all things considered. It has nothing to do with the Crumbled and more to do with the fact that she’s in a relationship with a pirate despite finding what he does wrong. It’s one of those ‘good girl falls for the bad boy’ situation except Nathan is really a nice guy who just decided to become a pirate with his life which she doesn’t agree with. Saturn’s assured her who she loves doesn’t change who she is or the good she’s done and will do but Elena is anxious about it all the same.
