"I saw you standing in the shadows and your eyes were blue." 
Shimmerscale was only a hatchling when he met Blue. Back then, Shimmerscale shouldn’t have been outside his mother’s nest, let alone outside the walls of his homeclan. Not at that age. However, talk of mythical creatures and dangerous foes within the boundary forests had intrigued the young beast. If he could brave that forest, if he could just last a full day, he could brag to his nestmates that HE went on an adventure before THEY could. Instead he found Blue. A wild creature- what he assumed was a fellow dragon at the time- with skin like that of a poisonous jungle frog and eyes like wild lightning. A creature that was utterly terrifying until Shimmerscale realized they were . . . the same age as him. A hatchling. Just a young boy, like him. Blue was looking to play, to brave the forests, just like Shimmerscale. And so they played. Until the moon was set high and Shimmerscale’s mother came hunting for her disobedient son. Ignoring all tall tales of a ‘weird frog-dragon in the woods.’ Shimmerscale and the mysterious dragon were separated, only to be reunited the next day. And the next, and the next, and the next. They were fast friends. Blue didn’t have a name, which was odd to Shimmerscale, but that didn’t hurt their friendship in the slightest. Shimmerscale named him Blue Eyes. Blue Eyes the Adventurous. Blue was enamored with their new name and their friendship continued on as strong as ever. Shimmerscale spent his entire childhood in that forest. Spent his adolescent years with Blue. Adventuring the woods at all waking hours of the day. Discovering ruins, hunting down strange beasts, exploring the caves beneath the forest roots. Falling in love. Shimmerscale was the first to notice it. Their hands, often intertwined. Their eyes, lingering on each other. The quietness. The unsaid. The sounds of the forest moving around them. Their hearts beating slowly. Shimmerscale kissed first, but Blue kissed back. It was strange, at first. Blue did not want to leave the forest with him. Ever. Nor did Shimmerscale’s family believe him. Nor his clan, his other friends. Blue didn’t want to meet Shimmerscale’s family either- not that Shimmerscale could blame him. They didn’t think he was REAL after all. No, their love was real. That was all that mattered. Shimmerscale visited Blue Eyes every day regardless of what his family said. When it came time for Shimmerscale to make a life for himself, to find work and settle down with a clan, he tried to convince Blue to join him. To settle. They were fully grown, after all. Instead he was met with denial. Blue was having none of it. He would not leave the forest and he would not settle with OTHER dragons. They were at a loss there, but Shimmerscale understood. Tomorrow, they would discuss what to do next. Shimmerscale wanted to be with Blue no matter what happened- they only needed to figure out how. A kiss and a promise made were the last things Shimmerscale was able to experience with Blue. The ever mysterious Blue Eyes the Adventurous was nowhere to be found the following days. The following months. The following years. Simply gone. Shimmerscale would not have it. Following the vanishing of his love, the young dragon spent the next years searching for Blue. In their forest where they met, in the forest they only just started exploring. In the forests that were nearby. The forests that were far away. He searched until he decided that searching was not enough. He STUDIED. Looked to textbooks, to journals, to historians, to fellow adventurers, to travelers simply walking by. Perhaps they heard something, perhaps there was an explanation to what or where Blue was. Anything. Anything at all. In the end, Shimmerscale came up empty handed. His love for Blue was as strong as ever- but Shimmerscale’s health was declining. A life on the road in search of a soul that no other dragon had ever met was not easy. He didn’t want to give up, but his body ached for an easier life. So, Shimmerscale became a teacher. His search for Blue among text and scroll had given him the experience needed to teach a younger generation. Which he found came easily to him. All the while, he was given access to a library that would aid his ever-long search for the mysterious dragon of his past.
