Altar started his shift in the murky hour before day broke. He flew low across the treetops, and rose as the sun rose.

He never craved for the combat that came with The Guard, only the challenge. The cold air filled his lungs, sharpened his senses. His eyes kept aware of every horizon, as though he might command it.

He wanted to impress, to prove the tempo of his spirit. He wove through the currents and fell through them in twirls, a maple key. His mind was on rhythm and balance, symmetry and sway.
