They call him a monster. He knows he is. Gatekeeper used to be a light dragon, a scholarly young thing. He would pore over books for days, taking in the wonderful words with a fiery passion for more. His searching for more took him to the Southern Icefield, where he joined a clan and continued his readings. His new clanmates were a bit hesitant of him and his size, but he pulled his weight in the clan and was accepted rather quickly. And then came the day that Gatekeeper put down his books and went out for a quick flight to stretch his wings. He flew high, touching the clouds, feeling that if he went any higher he would meet the same fate as Icarus - his wings would burn and he would plummet from the sky. He spotted a flock of harpies, and stayed wary, giving them a wide berth. But they saw him. They flew towards him. And they attacked him, claws swinging, wings beating wildly around his ears as he tried to break free from the prison of warm bodies. In this wild manner he flew up, trying desperately to get away, and realized too late that he had gone too high. The harpies fell away, their wings sizzling, and Gatekeeper opened his eyes wide, finally free from the storm - only to look straight into the sun and burn his sight away. He would never see again, his eyes rendered useless. He covered them with a blindfold because he had been told his eyes were pure white, glazed over so much that they struck terror into his once friendly clanmates. But there was something else that bothered his clanmates even more: He felt the presence of souls rising from the dead. When a young hatchling died of hypothermia, he felt its soul arise from its body, hovering in the air. It was almost as if he could reach out and touch it, and that was when he first heard the Voice. The Voice told him to send the soul on to the afterlife, and so he did, saying simply "You may pass," and he felt it leave the earth. He told the clan he sensed the hatchling die, and the next search party came in with the frozen body. Now he is known as a monster, a dragon who should have died, a dead heart. He smiles at all of these sayings, laughs. Because they are all true. He should have died from plummeting out of the sky, blinded by the unforgiving sun. He is a monster who guards the realm between life and death, telling souls either to move on or to stay as ghosts and finish any remaining business. He knows that, eventually, the day will come when he is meant to die. But Gatekeeper trusts in the Voice to let him stay on the earth, a grizzled old imp, continuing his work. He can not imagine anything else, for his days of scholar are gone along with his sight. written by Vinson |
