Cairnstone rest was full of secrets.

The stone, old as time itself, was the resting grounds for spirits whispering their stories to those still enough to listen. Finding the places where the history lingered was the hard part. No soul liked the same kind of places, had the same routines or required the same amount of coaxing as another. Get anything wrong and suddenly the wrong story is accredited to the wrong dragon or the voice no longer belongs to a dragon at all.

Her steps bubbled with an energy and excitement not echoed in these tunnels for years. Her eyes glittered followed the path etched into her memory, winding round and round until the left side widened into a small alcove, gently lit by the warm glow of floating candles. The entrance was decorated in an archway of intricate runes, shelves full of books and scrolls carved into the walls, and a small depression overfilled with soft moss. Slowly, she had turned the space into her own.

A stubborn sprout is what Agatha had called her; new life reaching for the sun despite the cold stone giving nothing in return. What the other snapper didn’t know is that the stone had given back to her, spurring her life forward from stagnation. For a moment, those memories showed the swallowing darkness of her youth, a phantom of herself curled on the lip of the then empty alcove drenched in sweat and stinking of fear.

Whispering spirits had been her salvation from fool hearted curiosity. Whether it be pity, compassion, or boredom, they had guided her back to the surface. There had been no deals or pacts to repay this mercy, or perhaps she had been too young to understand, but Spout ached to hear the dragon behind those whispers all those years ago. She would see that they were heard and shown gratitude.
