No… He looked much more like an “Eric” today. He circled the nest twice before creeping up and over Sam’s leg. Trickwise’s Mith companion giggled hysterically, offering a tiny feather shed from her wing. The perfect nose-tickling instrument… He didn’t even get to use it. The slumbering Tundra bolted upright. “Trick!” he scolded. “What are you doing? I’m trying to sleep.” Even though it was afternoon? Sam shut his eyes, slamming his head back into the soft leaves of his nest. “Go away.” Trickwise realized that Sam was sniffing in his sleep, shivering. It was just getting chilly outside, the time when most little bugs that made dragons sick liked to get out and stretch their wings. Little bugs had wings. Everyone knew that. “Aw, Sam, why didn’t you say?” Trickwise cackled. “The bugs have made a nest in your lungs. Let me just show them the way out.” Sam glared. “Because that’s disgusting.” “No,” Trickwise objected. “Sleeping in the middle of the afternoon is disgusting.” He focused all his energy on seeing the little bugs, their hiding spots, and chasing them out with a breath of Plague. The bugs liked the Plague. They’d follow it anywhere. “And then we can go get something to eat,” Trickwise said. “You know, Ammy made some smoothies today that are actually delicious.” Sam chuckled, already obviously feeling better. “Oh, is that so? It’s a miracle.” ________________________________________ |

Several dragons would prefer that Trickwise weren’t around, though not because he’s mean-spirited or anything like that. He simply won’t leave them alone, especially the dragons he likes. Not that he’s a bad dragon to have around, either. He is an excellent ward against illness, be it the common cold or the most virulent strain of the flu. This may be one reason why Samneric tolerates him (even though Trickwise alternates between calling him “Sam” or “Eric”)... or perhaps it’s because Samneric couldn’t possibly tell him to, for Earthshaker’s sake, go away. Not that Trickwise would, anyway. It doesn’t seem to much matter, since Samneric has grown accustomed to him, calls him “Trick,” and even misses him when he isn’t around. In fact… most dragons do. The casual observer might guess that Trickwise is a Shadow dragon without a good look at his eyes, but no. He’s a Plague dragon, through and through. And why not? Tricks and miracles are his method of survival. Whether it’s to entertain a host in trade for shelter and food, or to perform some feat before making off with some goods, Trickwise is always coming up with something to dazzle and distract. He never means any harm by it, though. He’s far too innocent for his Plague brothers and sisters, far too sharing. And what dragon couldn’t use a good miracle every now and again? ________________________________________ |
