Throughout his childhood, Charon kept to himself. The very thought of troubling himself too much with the matters of other dragons was enough to frustrate him to the point of anxiety, and so the young pearlcatcher spent most of his time wandering the surrounding area of his clan's lair. It was far more soothing to dwell upon the thoughts and matters of small creatures he found in the Starwood Strand, and Charon enjoyed the company of the plants and animals more than his fellow dragons. He felt compassion and pity for any lost or wounded animal he found, and tried to help them as best as he could. He was often found chasing disoriented bats back to their caves at sunrise, defending young wood ducks from predators, and doing other tasks of similar merit.

As he matured, Charon slowly realized that he felt most at peace in the moments he spent caring for other creatures. He gathered the courage to face his clan more confidently than he had before, in the hopes he would be able to help dragons just as he had helped other animals. Charon was unsure how to accomplish this, however, and struggled to overcome his shyness and ask the matriarch for an official job.

Fortunately for the pearlcatcher, it seemed his true calling came to him on its own. An official of the clan one day requested him to deliver a message to a nearby clan, noting his ability to focus and willingness to help others in any small task.
Charon delivered and received many more things after that, and quickly became the clan’s courier. The job was perfect for him; he enjoyed traveling, even short distances, and he knew that he was helping others in his own way with every delivery.

Having an official and important job meant more frequent interactions with his clans’ ambassadors, whom he surprisingly enjoyed the company of. There was one dragon, however, who Charon had a stronger affinity for than the rest: Itlacoa, the Fire Ambassador.
Their personalities were quite the opposites, and yet they quickly became close friends. There was something about Itlacoa's charm and open, fiery passion that Charon couldn't resist. It wasn't long before the two friends nurtured a special sort of strength together in their relationship. Itlacoa and Charon were soon mates.

Despite all the newfound happiness Charon found in life, and the gradual fading of his shyness and nervousness towards others, nothing could really shake his quiet, quick-to-withdraw personality, and none of Itlacoa's boldness really rubbed off on him. He would always be what lay beneath his ebony cowl and shadowlike shroud: a serene, compassionate dragon, quick to help others but not so quick to speak for himself, always content to pass over the Starwood Strand on his routes, reminiscing about the days he watched the creatures within, always ready to guide them back home.
