Bard is very straightforward when it comes to business, and business is all he has time for these days. He could get dragons to help with his workload, sure, but that's a few less pennies in his own pocket. And he is going to need all the wealth he can muster once he starts raising a kid or two of his own. Some day. One day. Not now, though. But some day.
If you happen to make him soften up to you, he will still tell you to put more clothing on when going outside at night, but he sounds more concerned and softer when he says that. But that might just be in your head.
