Biography

TYPHOON
Scribe

BIOGRAPHY

Typhoon always wanted to be a Mage. She never cared for Scribes or their seemingly meaningless duties to the Clan. What was the point of documenting what had happened, when you could use magic to manipulate what will happen and change the world for the better, instead of sitting and documenting the battles, soaked in regret and despair?
But Typhoon's dreams were crushed all too quickly. She had just recently grown to her full size, and it was the day the clan's leader Aura was to select positions for the newly grown dragons.
Typhoon knew she had no hope of being a Mage. But she could prove herself. When the other dragons' mothers were preparing them, Typhoon snuck out, and into the Mages' nests. Her intention was to use magic to do something big; perhaps to bring back Aura's lost mate Legacy from his duties with the Arcanist.
But as Typhoon began to cast the spell, something went horribly wrong. Flickers of magical electricity shot through her pearl, and up to her talons. She dropped the pearl with a yell.
Typhoon watched in horror as the bolts of electricity flickered bright one last time, and then shattered her pearl with a muffled explosion.
Sobbing, Typhoon leaned down to pick up a shard of her pearl. When she turned around again, one of the mages, BloodMoon, was standing there, watching her with an infuriated snarl.
"You!" BloodMoon roared. "What do you think you're doing, incompetent worm!"
"I was only trying to prove myself!" Typhoon cried. "I was trying to bring Legacy back so Aura would believe in me!"
"You failed." BloodMoon snarled. "Now get out. "
"BloodMoon." A voice interjected. "Cut her some slack. She's broken her pearl, and her dreams of becoming a Mage are shattered. A little sympathy is in order."
Another female Skydancer walked into the nest, pushing BloodMoon away. BloodMoon grudgingly flew off.
"You had the best intentions, Typhoon." The Skydancer smiled. Typhoon could never remember her name. "Sometimes it just goes wrong. For anyone."
Typhoon sniffled and looked up at her. "But... My pearl..."
Wordlessly, the Skydancer walked towards the pearl. She brushed one talon against the broken shards.
Typhoon watched in amazement as the pearl started to mend itself, the shattered pieces fitting smoothly back together. After a moment, it was as perfect and unbroken as ever. The Skydancer passed her the pearl.
"Don't tell Aura." The Skydancer smiled, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
Typhoon gazed in amazement, then ran outside the nest.
In the center of the clan, Aura stood majestically, regarding them all with an expression that was as hard to read as the Fae's monotone voice.
"Typhoon." Aura nodded. "BloodMoon told me what happened."
"I-I was just trying to prove myself, Aura." Typhoon stammered. "But now... Now you see what I can do. What I'm capable of. With the right training, I could use that magic to-"
"No." Aura interjected. "Typhoon, you will serve as a Scribe."
"A scribe? " Typhoon shrieked. "You have got to be kidding me!"
"No." Aura replied in monotone. "Your first document can be your incident with the Mages' nest, and how you foolishly used magic to fix your pearl. Now go, find a higher ranked scribe to teach you."
Typhoon glared rebelliously at Aura, then turned and ran to her own nest. After a long moment, she felt the brush of a feathery wing stroke her tail. She turned and sat up.
Beside her was an unusual Coatl, dull black with crackles of crimson red. Her wings were odd, covered in notes and parchment. She had several cobwebs trailing off her plumage.
"Typhoon, was it?" The Coatl mused, sitting down. "Look, I know how you feel. Took me ages to get to be a Scribe myself. If I was in your talons right now, I'd have done something stupid. But you didn't. Maybe being a Scribe isn't what you wanted, but you'll grow into it."
"How did you achieve your dreams?" Typhoon looked up. "How'd you be a Scribe?"
"It took a while." The Coatl smiled. "I found some ancient spells and whatnot. Wrote them on my wings, brought them back. Nobody doubted me then."
Typhoon smiled. "I wish I had that kind of luck. What's your name?"
"Knowledge." The Coatl smiled back. "And don't worry. Being a Scribe seems boring at first- and it is, until you get high enough up the ranks- but it's quite fun. Scrolls, ancient spells, lots of time to yourself, no dragons bothering you for magical advice."
And Knowledge was right. Slowly, Typhoon did grow into her position as a Scribe. She figured, magic saved her pearl, but it was her who created it in the first place. She captured all those memories into her pearl, so why couldn't she capture other dragons' memories into scrolls and documents?
It wasn't quite what she wanted. But Typhoon had achieved something at last.

PERSONALITY

Typhoon doesn't have much of the standard arrogance of the Pearlcatcher dragons. She believes she can do wonderful things, and that she herself is a powerful and special dragon, but she knows there are better dragons out there, dragons that could easily beat her in a fight or a battle of wits.
Typhoon can be quite sarcastic and introverted. She grew to love her position as a Scribe because she got to avoid every other dragon, sitting in silence with her notes. And most dragons didn't want to talk to her anyway, so it was a win-win.
