"What's wrong, mother bear?

They hadn't understood.

They hadn't understood that her ailment wasn't contagious. It wasn't spreadable, and she hadn't been bitten by anything, and she didn't have the Shade. They didn't even consider that the problem was derived from their very deity.

They didn't understand that it wasn't passed down.

No matter how many times she told them. It wasn't because of her offspring, they were not a part of this. They thought she was too respected, too kind to bring this horror upon herself. Her children must have sinned, and this is what the Gladekeeper had wrought upon her for their deeds, for their traitorous crimes. She pleaded that she had done wrong, but no one believed her.

They thought they were going to help her, but even if it was the case, it wasn't worth it. She had told them that, but it had not been a place for reason. It had been the place to scapegoat fear.

She fought viciously, but they did nothing but restrain her. She even tried to get them to kill her, but no. She was too esteemed. She hadn't "deserved" it. All she had ever known was falling apart around her, but

it had worked.

She had witnessed the murder of her own, and her fits stopped. She was calm again, she was back to her old self. A celebration called. They had purged this evil from their clan, and all was well again. Throughout the night, she was quiet, nodding politely to all who congratulated and ogled her, with an equally polite smile on her face.

The only thing scarier than loss of control, is complete control over one's self.

She left in the midst of the night into the depths of the forest. Even with her steady travel throughout the night, she had not been far enough to not hear the screams that rose with the dawn,
shedding light on the blood pool of the nursery.
