Biography

Irving was born into one of the most kind and caring clans in the Reedclift Ascent. His parents favored him over his brother, constantly praising his exceptional talents as he skillfully wove his way through the warm breezes. They often gave him the best fish out of the pile, sometimes traveling across the border with the Sea of a Thousand Currants in order to be sure that their son only ate the best and freshest fish they could to find. Yet, all this attention made Irving spoiled and selfish. When his parents could not make the flight and he was asked to eat a fish that had not been caught that day, he threw a tantrum so large that the clan leader herself came to talk to his parents. They said it was a result of illness and continued spoiling him. As he grew older, he refused to become a more active part of the clan; he insisted that his parents continue to take care of him. Moved by love for their favorite son, his parents picked up his slack and continued to pamper him. Eventually, space began to run short in the clan. When Riversong, the dragon in charge of rehoming extra dragons, came to the nest, there was nothing his parents could do to hide Irving’s laziness. She offered to rehome him into a family where he would learn responsibility. His parents resisted, afraid of loosing their favorite son. When she came to pick up his brother, Shuu, she took Irving with her to the resettlement facility. When he reached the lake, he refused to play with the other dragons, preferring to mope on his own. He watched as his brother and the other dragons he had come to the lake with went home with happy dragons. Away from his parents love, he was only worth his shimmery feathers. He hoped that if he were not picked to be adopted he would be allowed to return to his mother and father. Yet, some overly astute fae noticed his bright blue body as he lay down among the numerous reeds. His coatl ears could not understand her monotone voice, yet, watching her red and black crests flashing with excitement, he was not surprised when Riversong told him that he had a new family. Reluctantly, he followed his new clan leader to the other side of the Ascent to a slightly smaller lair.

Upon arrival in his new clan, he made to find whatever dragon was in charge of building nests. As he wandered around, he was shocked to discover that there were no other coatls in the clan. He felt even more wronged because he had no one he could comfortably communicate with. Huarahi eventually tracked him down and showed him where he could find the materials he needed to build his own nest. Angerly, he ripped off some bamboo and went to find a secluded spot in the lair; he had expected to be welcomed with a nest he didn’t need to build. As he was building his nest, he came across a Peacock Firebird who, reminding him of himself, he took as his familiar. Even after knowing him only a couple of hours, every dragon in the clan thought it was an apt match. The task then fell to Huarahi to find a task that he would be willing to do. Watching him playing in the warm breezes, it occurred to her that the trained exaltees often needed guides to lead them through the Twisting Crescendo and into the lair of the Windsinger in the Cloudsong. Figuring that interacting with a deity on a regular basis would be a job soothing enough for his ego, she trained him in the tricks needed to navigate the tumultuous winds of the Crescendo and sent him off with the next batch of exaltees. When he returned with his chest feathers puffed out after a successful delivery, she presented him as the clan’s official envoy to the Windsinger. Despite his initial misgivings, he has made friends with the only other coatl in the clan and has had a daughter with a visiting dragon. He gets a lot pleasure each time he returns to the clan and has grown to appreciate his new clan he now calls home.
