Sombra was the first of his siblings to open his eyes. He was born in a glittering cavern of the Southern Icefield, where the ceiling of the hatchery was festooned with sparkling mobiles of reflective fish scales and crushed blue quartz. He laid on his back, exhausted from the effort of pressing through the shell of his egg, and as the hatchery caretaker cleaned the new hatchlings he gazed at the glamour above him, pale eyes wide with wonder. When his mother drew near and nuzzled her new children, he clung to her scales, entranced by the opalescent flecks of light they sent all across the room. |

It was a surprise to no-one in his birth clan when Sombra grew into an interest in crystals of all kinds. As a hatchling he never ceased pawing through the treasury, turning coins and gems this way and that to examine the effect of the light on them. He gradually amassed a hoard of his own within the dens of the cavern. Glittering items spilled from every corner and shelf carved in the wall; seeker orbs, apatite, even deepearth geodes plundered from the earth representative's nest. Similar to the first sight his young eyes had beheld, his den was also adorned with ice crystals strung from a small oculus in the top of his den to allow light to set off all of his prizes.
Sombra is often described as a surprisingly multifaceted dragon. He is soft-spoken and gentle, yet possessed of a somewhat mischievous spirit and prone to spiriting away trinkets and shiny objects, which he will ask permission to take days later. While his den appears disorganized, it also holds a peculiar sort of beauty particular to Sombra alone; something sparkling and prismatic and corvid. He is not altogether selfish with his possessions; in fact, he often makes little gifts of his gems, even carving them into tiny figurines for his closest friends. Resting on a crystal pedestal behind a small shelf of books on gemstones is a fine apatite rose wrapped with a snow streak pinion; a creation Sombra hopes to bestow upon his future mate.
