Plague Doctor Subspecies

12723.png
Unlike most Plague dragons, Doctors attempt to cure any dragon they perceive as sick or injured. However, their 'cures' do more harm than good. It appears that Doctors are immune to almost every illness, but they carry every disease they encounter with them and spread them to whoever they come in contact with. Because of this, they tend to leave a trail of rot and decay wherever they go. Even the air around a Doctor is unsafe to breathe. They have single handedly wiped out entire lairs in a single visit. However, the Doctors themselves seem unaware of this. Rumor has it they rose fully-formed from the Wyrmwound, oiled and ready to cure the sick. However, this subspecies does not actually receive formal medical training. In fact they're old-school and rather superstitious, unbeknownst to patients.

The shiny appearance of this subspecies is indicative of the oils they use to prevent contracting the ailments of their patients, as well as to ensure the cleanup process after treatment is more thorough on themselves. At times they may even coat themselves in carpenter wax if an encounter is expected with excessive bodily fluids. Once in a rare while a Doctor may be seen covered in blood and other infectious substances, which is most easily discernible from their tert. Unfortunately, their oil habit does not lessen the risk of exposure for patients.

The birdskull of a Doctor is iconic. It is held in high regard within their culture, as the mask is earned as they grow. Obtaining one is a kind of transition into both adulthood and the medical profession. If a Doctor has proven itself capable of curing, so determined by its birth clan, this item will be fashioned just before they embark upon their first journey of search and save. It is also used as an identifier to those of their own kind to indicate that they are in control of an area and do no not need treatment themselves. From there on the rest of their lives are spent as an uninvited guest of the sick, charming their way into lairs with a simple phrase:
"Trust me, I'm a doctor."

These dragons tend to be nomadic, wandering through various territories in search of future patients. They only stay in one place long enough to 'cure' whatever dragons they can find. While they spread whatever illness they come in contact with, it has been observed that all of them spread the bubonic plague regardless of whether or not they have encountered it before.
