THE TREASONOUS
Though Lord Frostmane's lean, graceful figure was high in the sky, a mere speck against the full moon, Azain Ravenwing could not help but feel some gnawing agitation in the pit of his stomach as he turned to his watchful companions. Auroris Frostmane, leader of one the Southern Icefields' most notorious clans of mercenaries, punished traitors with slow, agonizing deaths - but he could not punish what he did not know.
Azain was a comely dragon, with shimmering midnight scales, sleek, feathered wings, and the sharp, angular features of a feral cat. Though the young male was small in stature, something in his glittering, crimson eyes commanded respect. Now, Azain cast one last wary look towards the sky before addressing his followers, his voice as silky and cold as the glittering snow around them. "My dear friends - our time has finally come. Tomorrow, Seraf leaves to fight for some summer clan - and he takes with him some of his best. I will personally deal with Tyralian and his pet mages - they will not pose us any problem. Frostmane will have a handful of his most trusted close, perhaps, but we have the numbers...and a surprise in Xarix," he said, his eyes flickering towards a lean, scarred mercenary half-obscured in the shadows. "Never has our dear leader been so friendless - it is time to end the reign of this pathetic dreamer. "
A thin, reedy dragon with pale scales shifted uneasily and spoke, his voice almost shrill with anxiety. "We may have a slight advantage in numbers, it's true...but Xarix is no Seraf," he said, casting a scowling Xarix a slightly apologetic glance. "And there's Nyari too - Seraf trained her personally, and she is very loyal to Frostmane. Azain - this could be a mistake...maybe we should not be so hasty..."
"Hasty?" Azain snorted derisively. "We have planned and waited long enough. Frostmane does not suspect anything; we can catch him unawares, and that is our main advantage. He trusts me overmuch, and his loyal friends will not be able to save him if they are not here. There are many who follow him merely because it is the easy thing to do - they will turn to our cause when Frostmane is dead. After all...it will be that, or the sword. Trust me, friends," said Azain fiercely, "I've had enough of Frostmane's idealistic plans. He will never reclaim his family seat - and if he attempts it, we will be mere fodder for his fruitless ambitions. No, it is time to claim this clan as our own - it is time for a new vision, a new leader."
