Ferrymen

Some say that serving the gods is an honor. That to be exalted is to ascend to a higher purpose in life where one can truly make a difference by serving their deity directly; a key role in keeping Sornieth balanced and in peace.

And there are others that see it with distrust. A forced exile to control the ever growing population. No dragon has ever come back from servitude.
Some whisper how maybe the reason for their stay is not such a good one, after all.

Regardless of their opinion of those sent to serve the gods, not one dragon looks favorably towards the few that make the way back. Those chosen few work in mysterious ways, taking dragons to their final place besides their gods and coming back to collect the next souls sent into exalted service.
Rumors speak of a small fae of otherworldly powers that commands such ferrymen, transporting souls onto the realm of the gods without a trace.

But none dare speak of it aloud, lest of all their words make their way to the masters. And above all, those sent to collect the exalted ones must be avoided at all costs.
To cross one such dragon would be a very bad thing, indeed.

Guide

Every ferryman must have a guide. Ephemeral companions to guide them in their travels and to keep them from succumbing to madness and despair, those that travel with them are seen in a much better light than their travel companions.

Not quite corporeal, guides are believed to come from the same place as the feared ferrymen, not quite alive, but something else entirely. Appearing only at night, they can be spotted by their characteristic glow, akin to a constellation as they move through the skies, followed by the entourage of those departing with them.

Much like their male counterparts, guides have no memory of their previous lives – if there is one – nor do they remember what happened during their journey. Their consciousness exists only between jobs.

Duty

The dragons of this clan were afraid of her. They were young, and she felt the absence of something great among them, as if they had never seen one like herself. A few asked questions, wondering if she was akin to those who emerged from the sea so many years ago, the ones who bore the stars on their backs and in their eyes, who saw nothing but love and kindness.

She could not prevent the longing in her heart when she told them no.

They respected her position greatly, those who worked among her. Before, the gentle Librarian and his mate were the ones to preform the rite of exaltation, and the sorrow in their eyes faded a bit when she proclaimed herself as one who would assist them in this endeavor. It felt nice, to be needed like this.

But something unnerved her about the rush that was felt when one was to be exalted. There was little ceremony, and those involved begged her to take them to the Shadowbinder as quickly as possible, although they knew well enough that she could not control herself during the process. But the panic in their eyes made her wish she could.

The worst part was the feeling she had once she returned, the malice leaking from some being who felt she had stolen those souls from her, and though she knew not the source, she could understand its intent.

And it did not mean well.
