Jeran is one of the Oakheart Clan's best dancers, and performs alongside Evensong for all celebrations, markets and festivals, of which the clan hosts a great many.
Jeran was born with a natural affinity with wind magic, despite hailing from Nature originally- and easily picked up a little of the Stormcatcher’s gift from his home lair, on board their great lightning-catcher ships that sailed by magic through the clouds. He is light on his feet, distant and dreamy by nature, effortless and elemental in the air, more like a creature of dreams and magic than a living breathing dragon. He and his twin sister Cera were born with wandering hearts, wind-blown by choice, and were rarely if ever seen on the ground. Why walk, they would say, when you can dance?

Jeran and Cera were twins, with a kind of empathic/telepathic bond that made them seem more like two aspects of the one creature, than two separate dragons. They were both dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, performing death-defying feats and breathtaking arial spectacles to awe and delight, particularly telling stories through their dance, while Bard or some other famous orator will recite the story. Their interpretive dance re-imaginings of ancient fables and creation mythology were so famous that they were often requested to visit other lairs, to perform their feats to crowded fields, mountainsides, amphitheatres of hundreds, crowding in to watch the living fireworks which are them displaying their magic, filling and illuminating the sky.

But, one cannot be free as a bird without alighting sometime, and it was then that trouble struck. They'd made enemies in their days on board the Good Ship Flamedance, enemies who had long memories and fast bow arms. They captured the twins, and were about to execute them both, so they made a plot and set fire to the pirate ship, escaping in the chaos. They'd planned to meet at the shore of the headland, the closest dry land, but Jeran arrived alone. He waited three days, never sleeping, barely eating, feeling like he could hardly breathe with an unshakeable tight dread wrapped around his heart. Then news reached him from the sand-pickers that a body had washed ashore. He'd made it out alive; Cera hadn't. And a part of him, died with her.

A Home In Oakheart

____Jeran is still a dancer, because some things cannot be broken even by tragedy, and that's the core of a person's being, the things that make up their spirit. But he remains disinterested in partners, of any kind. Many admire his stunning good looks and effortless grace, in the air or on the ground, but he views them with vague disinterest when they approach him, stammering their affections and clutching some trifle they seek to impress him by. He looks at them, deep into their eyes, smiles faintly, sorrowfully, shakes his head, and takes flight. It is said he is looking for something in their eyes, something which he does not find. But then again, perhaps he is just saddened that he has to let them down; for he is an illusion, a dream of a dragon- the reality of him is different to that persona which he plays while performing. The reality of a thing rarely matches up to its hope. Maybe he is letting them down gently, and in doing so, protecting himself.

____Jeran did have an on-again, off-again love affair with Evensong, his dance partner, but it was quite short-lived and his wounds of the heart never allowed them to develop a deeper connection. Their parting was amicable, and they remain friends, they simply were not a match in a romantic sense, just in a professional one. They are still the two best dancers Oakheart has ever seen, excepting the strange Coatl twins and their acrobatic feats of illusion, but Jeran refuses to dance with them. He seems distressed even seeing them. The loss of his own twin is still too fresh, too keen in his heart, and may always be thus.

Lately, though, he has been enjoying the company of the clan's night-nurse, Mahariel, healer of hearts and minds and bodies alike- so perhaps there's hope for him yet.
