A scalding desert wind tears through the tall brown skeletons, ther arms ever reaching, ever grasping for something that can never be reached. A deep orange orb dips below the horizon, tinging the scene with a red hue akin to that of blood. A figure, outlined in light, bends down. He runs his claws through the sand, searching, sifting. A muffled “ah” breaks the choking, deadly silence. Claws scrape over a beaten brass surface. Over and over and over again, scraping and scraping, searching and searching. The figure cups both his hands around the object, and holds it to the sun, chanting in a foreign tongue. As if on its own accord, the object opens, revealing a strange, otherworldly compass. The sun’s last rays, as if drawn to it, illuminate the compass, revealing swirling runes etched into the sides. The runes flare, and the compass snaps shut with a sound that echoes throughout the dead forest. The figure’s mouth curls upwards, and claws close around the compass, hiding it from view once more.
