Main Theme:

______ Kaiba. Child of fire mages. Second-born hatchling. She grew up in a strict household, focused solely on unlocking the magical potential of the two hatchlings. Kaiba's older brother, gifted in his flame summoning abilities, was favored by their parents.


______ However, Kaiba never thought that favoritism ran as deep as she eventually realized. Kaiba's older brother went missing one evening. The parents had heard of tales of dragons getting lost in the forest and never returning. That a beast was out there that stole their loved ones and never let them go. Deeply superstitious and running out of hope, Kaiba's parents made that dire choice to try the unspeakable to get their boy back.

______ All she remembers is waking suddenly and a bag being put over her head. Feeling jostling as she's carried somewhere, but she hears her parent's hushed voices whispering urgently, so all must be well.


______ She wakes and finds herself tied to a tree in the middle of a dark forest. Her mother is crying and hysterically apologizing to Kaiba, as her father reaches for a spellbook. Prayers are said. Tears are shed. Kaiba is left alone in the forest.

______ Her eyes open to see the world, changed. The green trees and soft breezes of summer turned to reddish brown leaves and chilled gusts of unforgiving wind. The grove seems close to home and yet, unfamiliar. She steels herself and attempts to light a fire. Nothing. She quickly realizes magic is dulled in this strange place.



______ Cold and alone she slowly remembers the events that lead her to this damned prison of trees. Her parents sacrificed her to that supernatural beast that only hatchlings believed in. They wanted her brother back and were willing to lose their daughter to find him.

______ Betrayal


______ Despite her gifted flame magic, here she could only manage to produce a small flame. Only enough to light three feet in front of her. Everything that used to keep her safe, her family, her magic. All of it was gone. She has only herself and one tiny flame to keep her alive.

When she sleeps in the forest her mind becomes muddled and the leaves swim around her. But when she looks at the flame, her mind clears. That flame keeps her mind clear enough to survive a few weeks in the forest by herself.


______ One day she sees a light far ahead. Out of the darkness comes a guardian whose colors match the falling leaves. The guardian carries a bright lantern with her that can be seen from far away. She says nothing and only gestures for Kaiba to follow her.




______ Kaiba joins in a procession of dragons all following the guardian who, Kaiba has learned, is called Runa. Of the dragons in the caravan, most are so dulled in spirit it all they can manage to keep their eyes on the lantern and continue walking. A few can still speak and they say that Runa has been in the forest for hundreds of years and she is going to lead them to the edge.



______ Days pass and weeks meld together into years. Kaiba can no longer mark the passage of time. Her whole conciousness is focused on the lantern ahead. One day we'll get out.
