Biography
Borage is an "edible" flower native to the Mediterranean region of Europe... and I say edible, because its safety is dubious depending on how the plant is being used.
Europe has used this flower for centuries as a herb and garnish. It is described as a cucumber taste. However, most modern commercialized uses for this plant are for its oil, processed into borage seed oil. Its applications include... and this is quite the list on the Wiki...
Eczema, dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, stress, PMS, diabetes, ADHD, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), inflammation, preventing heart disease and stroke...
There is no substantial evidence that its applications are any more effective than a placebo. In fact, borage seed oil that is not certified free of toxic unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (UPAs) may cause substantial liver damage. It can also prolong bleeding and should not be taken by anyone going into surgery. Lastly, it can cause several complications in pregnancy. Yikes.
On the bright side, borage is popular in companion planting. It's commonly paired with legumes, spinach, brassicas, strawberries, and tomatoes, warding off pests.
