The Stone Mage
She / Her
Gentle At Heart
Copper was born of the earth. The strength of the world rested in her shoulders, thrumming in her blood. Even as a hatchling, barely able to flap, the power of Dragonhome flowed through her. The things she created were wondrous to behold: she sculpted effigies and statues, sweeping landscapes and daring battle scenes on the walls of the lair. Rock and stone bent joyously to her will, and for a time she was happy with her lot in life. When not off causing mischief with her siblings, Copper was often drafted in to help any dragon who needed it. Gathering, organising, counting treasure, stalking dangerous amaranth moths... Each day was different and exciting, drenched in possibility. She learned to see the best in all her tasks, no matter how tedious or dull, and all the while the stone sang to her. Then the Oracle came. She walked slowly, bones creaking far beyond her age, and offered the blessing of the Tidelord's gifts in exchange for food and shelter for a time. Copper's clan leader accepted, solemnly, bowing to her in the old way and citing the kinship of their respective deities. She was given her own room - a great honour indeed in such a small lair - and for a time she settled there, silently contemplating. For weeks on end, the Oracle sat in total silence, head bowed and claws curled around her pearl, staring at its opalescent surface. She eschewed all food and comfort, and simply sat, until she seemed to Copper to have become stone herself. Several times, dared by her brother, Copper drew close enough to see how the pearlcatcher's eyes continued to twitch, dancing beneath the filmy lids as though she were dreaming. Copper never dared address her, though, just in case. |
Time passed, and many of the clan seemed to forget the Oracle was even there. They bustled about her as though she really was just another statue, and went on with their lives, but the Clan Leader didn't forget. Every day, Zeal would go to the Oracle's side and sit with her, head bowed as though in prayer, and then would leave as silently as he came.
Six months gone, and Copper was finally an adult, able to choose her own destiny and direction in life, to choose her own name. The ceremony was an ancient one, solemn and slow, and took three days to prepare. First, she was presented to the image of the Earthshaker, carved on the Great Wall of the lair. Then, the clan mages called the mud and dust at the icon's feet, to cover Copper in cleansing stone and bring forth the truth of his soul. Though it made her wince, Copper didn't correct them in their assumption. There would be time enough, after all, once she had the Earthshaker's blessing.
As the mud hardened and began to creep over her skin, Copper willed her mind to shut down and, as she had been taught, sank into herslef to meditate on the concept of Truth. The new name, the one she chose for herself, would reflect that which was most important in her soul and was not a decision to be made lightly.
As it had taken three days to prepare, so she spent three days contemplating, until the mages gathered about her once again and solemnly sang to the stone, until it fell away from her, revealing her new form. She had been expecting the runes, really; had felt them itch beneath her skin on the days leading up to the ceremony, but she hadn't expected the colour. Her mother's legacy was etched in warm grey, her father's in the same coppery hue as his skin. Her runes looked like dried blood, caked over like a scab.
The mages continued to sing, humming and harmonising as she regarded the rich new umber of her claws with a horrified fascination. They didn't miss a beat, but she could hear the alarmed murmers of her clan behind them, beyond their comforting circle of voices.
The song changed and the mages all turned to look at her as one, inviting her to join her voice with theirs, to offer up her truth to the Earthshaker, but as she opened her mouth to speak a new voice rang out, cutting through the song and the whispers like a knife through flesh.
"Solitaurin," it said, clear but rasping. "I name you Solitaurin."
The whispers rose again to shouts of horror and anger as the clan turned on the Oracle, standing at the back of the crowd. Several dragons moved forward to strike her for interfering, for breaking tradition, but the Clan Leader held them back. He turned to give the signal for the mages to continue, for Copper to name herself regardless of the Oracle's interruption, but the carven figure of the Earthshaker began to rumble. Its zircon eyes began to glow, brighter, brighter, blindingly brighter, and then faded to their usual dull sheen.
The Earthshaker had accepted the wrong name.
The leader turned on the Oracle who regarded him grimly as he circled her. "How dare you?" he asked. "We have given you shelter, warmth, kindness, and you repay us with this? With this... this treachery?"
"I have betrayed nothing. You asked me for a gift of blessing. I have given it."
The Leader hissed at her, tail lashing.
"This is no blessing. You have cursed him! Solitaurin, the name of a wanderer, of one who would be alone! You have robbed him of his future-"
"I have robbed her of nothing," the Oracle said, and Copper jumped to hear it. She had never told anyone that truth; how, by the Earthshaker, had the pearlcatcher known? "I was brought here by the deities, whose visions I follow, to help Solitaurin begin her life anew. I was brought here for her sake, and it is for her sake that I name her."
While the clan sputtered in indignation and fury about broken traditions and the insult of calling copper a female, the Oracle turned to the young skydancer and inclined her head.
"Walk with me, Solitaurin, and find your heart in my words."
"I forbid it!" the leader exclaimed. "You have no right!"
To her dying day, Solitaurin (for the magic of the word was already sinking into her bones, reshaping her) never knew what possessed her to ignore him. She stepped forward, beside the Oracle, and together they walked past family and friends, playmates and mentors alike. The clan fell silent as they watched them leave, their gazes practically burning Solitaurin's new skin with their fury and disbelief, until they rounded a corner and left her old clan behind.
