A snarl roused him out of his slumber. His eyes snapped open, searching the dimly lit cavern for the source of the sound. Bones creaking, Darken unfurled his massive form and rose to his feet, climbing out of his warm bed of leaves. Another snarl, followed by giggling, filled the enclosed space as the elephantine Imperial made his way towards the inky darkness in the back of the den. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he spotted a twitching tail behind a stalagmite. ’Well, well….’, he thought to himself, ’Dinner’s early!’
With a deafening roar, Darkened pounced….
…. And caught a squirming young dragonling in his enormous jaws.
”GRANDPA! Put me down!” the hatchling squealed, no longer able to snarl ferociously at his grandfather from between teeth. The enormous Imperial gave his catch a light shake and ceded to the youngling’s demand. In a smooth, single movement, Darken tossed the young dragonling halfway across the cavern and into the soft bed of leaves. ”You shouldn’t wake a warrior from his sleep, young one.”
The young dragon shot to his feet, shaking the leaves off his back energetically. ”I said put me DOWN. Not throw me!”, the youngling huffed, feigning anger. He grumpily stalked back over to his grandfather and took a seat by his massive front paws. ”I brought you those fish you asked for! Can I get a story noooowww?”
Darken craned his neck to peer down at the miniscule dragonling. ”Hmmm…” he grumbled, wondering where this headstrong youngling got his persistence. Then again, Darken was his grandpa. The Imperial decided it would be futile to deny the kid his story. Conceding (again) to the younglings demands, Darken sauntered back over to the bed of leaves and picked up his dinner. ”Just one story, kid. I’d like to get back to my nap before sunrise. Some of us have work in the morning.”
A soft purr echoed through the cavernous space, followed by the brush of fur against his dark violet scales. Fuzz, Darken’s trusty cat companion, had reappeared after all the commotion had died down to sniff at the pile of food the young dragonling had placed at the edge of the leaves.. ’That cat sure knows when there’s food involved…’ the Imperial thought to himself as he watched the Maine **** begin nibbling on a fish, one furred paw pressed firmly down to keep the slippery morsel from sliding away from his mouth on the smooth rock floor.
Between the two of them, dinner was quickly demolished. Satisfied with their meals, both dragon and feline curled against each other. The young dragonling waited patiently until he noticed his grandfather’s eyelids drift lower and lower, a signal the ancient behemoth was returning to his slumber.
”MY STORY!” The dragonling whined pitifully. ”Don’t forget about my story!”
Darken couldn’t help but chuckle as he cracked an eye open and fixed his gaze on the little dragon before him. He chuckled again when he saw the mighty frown plastered on the youngling’s face.
”You want a story, young one? Hmm…. Once upon a time there was a little dragon, much like you, who ventured into the Mire all alone….”
And on Darken went, spinning tall tales of the swampy forest. He talked of the venomous toridae, fabled to kill a dragon with one poisoned bite. Foreboding trees, menacing wartoads, and enchanted fog filled the cavern as the he wove a passionate story about long dead adventurers and one particularly cunning violet Imperial. Stars filled the sky outside the cavern, and yet Darkened continued. On and on he went about the dangerous monsters that lurked in the gloom of the swamp, caught up in his memories.
A snore distracted him from his narration. The little dragonling had fallen fast asleep, with Fuzz snug against his back. The warrior smiled softly to himself and listened to the young one’s peaceful snoring. In the sudden calmness, the cat cracked one eye open and stretched out, claws kneading the air as if to signal that it was finally time for bed. Succumbing to slumber, the Imperial curled his massive form around the smaller creatures and chuckled again before closing his eyes.
”You know, Fuzz…” Darken grumbled, ”One of these days, that kid’s gonna be the one telling me about his grand adventures….”
