Helheim, also known as House of Hel, is the place where the dead reside. It is one of the nine worlds connected to Yggdrasil by one of her three roots. It is surrounded by the river of Gjoll which separates it from the living world. As Valhalla is kept for the bravest who die in battle, the people who die of old age or illness reside in Helheim. However, once there no one can escape. It is guarded not only by its impassable river but also Garm, Modgud, and the giant Hraesvelg known as "corpse eater".
