"Have you ever felt nothing at all?"
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

Strangely enough, Ariadne appeared in the lair of the Frozen-Sea dragons alone and without invitation. She was as frozen as a statue, eyes such a pale yellow they were nearly mistaken for Ice. When asked why she was there, she unwound herself from her crouched position and merely said a name. "Ceald."

The dragons who found her were surprised; how did this stranger know the name of their lair? It was so rarely spoken, merely a formality, and yet this unknown had uttered it.

She was quickly brought to Aelius.

If he was put off by her emotionless way of speaking and cold eyes, he did not show it. He spoke with her away from the others, in an alcove situated in the dens, and they spoke in hushed tones. For the most part, it was Aelius who did the speaking. He asked questions, many, and she answered them in short responses. The other clan members buzzed in the background, as gossipy as newborns.

Later, when it would seem their conversation was completed, Aelius informed them all that Ariadne would be staying with them indefinitely. She was a gift from a neighboring clan seeking an alliance, a guardian and a warrior and honor-bound to a code she did not intend on sharing. With this, Aelius was content. And with that, the other dragons were too.

She was a strange thing, Ariadne. She spoke little and moved even less. She situated herself in strange places and tucked into herself, as still as the dead. If she blinked, no one saw it. She moved rarely and, indeed, only when there posed a threat to the clan or when she took her meals. A guardian, it would seem, who knew little else.

Ariadne, at the very least, did not mind this new role she played. She knew only this: the cold feel of metal pressed against her scales, the tome bound around her shoulder, the spine unopened, and the promise of something else waiting for her. She didn't know what it would be, but she was willing to wait.

In her memories, when she allowed herself to ponder them, she saw only a thick white fog. It was strange, this dull lifeless thing, and the act of thinking of them left her dazed. Cold. She was not with them for long.

Fresher were the memories of Trigg. He was a bogsneak and a genius—where they not synonymous these days?—but he knew little of emotion and enjoyment. They were similar in that regard. Trigg knew only the work in front of him and the work just beyond that and it was this that he focused on. When he found Ariadne, a perfectly emotionless dragon devoid of memories, it was clear what he would do. If anyone could appreciate a chance to build, it was him.

Trigg was, above all else, a builder. And so he built.

Ariadne doesn't remember much of her time with Trigg. Perhaps it was because her time with him was a doorway to another life. Or perhaps it was because the white fog of her past was all too easy to step into. It was almost a comfort to forget, and it was something she allowed herself to do often. Clearing her mind. Forgetting.

A part of her thinks she is happy. Happy to live as near-lifeless metal, an automaton of draconic design. She thinks she wanted this, once. She thinks she has peace. It is easy to be content when one does not remember the past.

She remembers very little of herself, too.
