"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall..."
PyU92rt.png

She was doomed, the moment she set a foot into this damned empire, she felt it in her bones. In her blood. She was doomed. And all was for naught, mother and father were so worried, so worried sick, they could lay beside her bed and there was nothing to be done to soothe her. She was dying and no one knew why. What had she done, she screamed out in naive agony, that deserved this kind of pain?

You are all that remains.

A dark whisper, coming to her from roses and in the mellow winds of the eternal night. Reaching her bed and her ear when the fever pitch was at its greatest. She thought she could see it, the many winged, three eyed shadow, dark and looming yet bound by chains riddled with thorns. The shadow loomed and towered and hunched, chains around bony arms and neck like vines, ready to devour and tug it back underground.

With spindly fingers, it reached out, eyes aglow in feverent magenta, it tried to touch but all she felt was a foul wind of stale air and bitter regret. Where the shadow touched, marks of black started to bloom, decay that ate her body while her heart was still beating and her blood still warm. Mother cried, Father did not. Instead, he acted.

Beg for something that was never given.

They argued, they screamed and pushed each other, in the end, they gave in. Father lifted her young, frail body, Mother wrapped her in blankets. Together, they walked. Past gardens that were nurtured by living dolls, straight into the palace of dark. Next to a gaping mouth of hellish darkness, muzzled only by a purple glowing seal, they bent their knee and laid her out at the feet of the very heart of the empire. And according to Mother’s tales later on, the Emperor looked upon her with old horror, like she was a ghost of a past long buried.

She remembers nothing of this time but the winged blackness and three eyes aglow. Her memories came back to her only when she found herself adorned with sacred bloom, vivid, lively while her mother grieved the loss of a husband. He left, as she said, over night. And when the lies about incompetence and inability to understand came over the mother's lips, the daughter soaked them up with innocent delight.

Naive girl, do you always believe?

She believed, in the deity at the helm of her home, in the ones depicted in the crystal dome of the temple. She believed as a child and she did as a young woman. So much indeed, that she picked up an oath of blood, she donned armor as black as the night and she wore her hair short and her sword always at her hip. It was rare, for one of Veiled Gardens to enter the Undying army, a place that was rotten, vile and chaotic at the best of time. Back stabbing and crime and bloodshed went hand in hand and the General did nothing to quench this lawlessness. So she challenged him, she who wore the Emperor’s sacred bloom on her wings, her back against the fabled demon of the red haze, the winner would take it all.

The General laughed at her, breath laced with alcohol and blood, he entertained her thoughts and stomped her into the ground with no effort. Beaten before she even had a chance to process, she was left to lick her own wounds, a title given out of malicious pity. But with titles - even empty ones - came power. Her half brother taught her so much between tense conversations and cold embraces, where promises dwell, there be power.

Empty or not, she was where she was now. The Head of Guard, only answering to the General, she ordered the knights; and she put a stop to ravenous gluttony for violence in their own ranks. It was time for a change and she’d be damned if she let this slip through her hands.

And still, at the edge of her vision, she saw it again. That looming, hunched figure of mingling darkness, bound by thorny vines and old regrets. And its three eyed, hot pink gaze weighed heavily on her, clouding mind and judgment in old fear.

Have you truly done enough?
