She who consumes emotions

The year her egg came into the word, the cold winds bore down from the heavens like the merciless wrath of the gods. It was a harsh winter, even by the standards of ice dragons. Struggling for survival and pressed for time, a young pair of pearlcatchers made their nest high on the slopes of a mountain overlooking the Fortress of Ends. When the storms of winter proved too much for the landscape to bear, an avalanche began near the mountain’s peak and smothered everything in its wake. Thus, the nest and the egg within were lost for a thousand years.

In modern times, when the sun melted the slopes of the mountain range, a group of archeologists excavated the area and found an ice-covered egg remarkably well preserved. They determined that it was ancient, a relic of times long past. They split their findings before returning to their homelands, and the egg was taken to the clan called Dreamscape. The surprise of the clan was great when, on the eve of the winter solstice, the egg hatched.

Her scales were marked with the magic that had kept her hidden for so many years, manifested in runes of shimmering ice. Her spirit was just as cold, for she seemed to feel little emotion and spent much of her time alone. Most attempts to connect with her failed, and after some time the majority of dragons stopped trying.

Secretly, she desired to feel these powerful emotions that others took for granted. She could feel mild distaste or interest, but the strong passions of the heart were lost to her. Rage, sorrow, love…she knew none of these things. The one thing she did know was hunger – not for physical subsistence, but something more. Then, one day when a clanmate was consumed by anger, she felt energy from his spirit flowing into her own. For a split second, she felt all the rage within his heart. It was then that she learned that she could feed off of the emotional energy of others. From then on she became drawn to those carrying strong emotions, for through them she could finally feel that which had always been out of her reach.

Not wanting to depend on the emotions of others constantly, she learned to store a small amount of the energy as magic within her pearl, changing it to reflect the colors of the night sky. When depleted, it returns to its usual pale color - a sign that she is growing hungry and will soon need to find sustenance elsewhere.

I feel your sorrow, deep and dark like the ocean trenches of the Tidelord’s domain. The helpless cry of one close to death, the despair of lost dreams, the emptiness of spirit after the loss of a loved one. Give it to me.

I feel your fear, a chill that shakes you to your very core. The frantic escape of hunted prey, the trembling anxiety of one faced with the unknown, the creeping sensation on the back of your neck when you know you are being watched. Give it to me.

I feel your wrath, poisonous and sharp, like a deadly flash of lightning or a simmering cauldron of toxins. The unbridled rage of one with nothing left to lose, the hidden grudge of one biding their time, the incredulous anger of one betrayed. Give it to me.
