The Pilot

I've always wanted to be the fastest in all of Sornieth. It's a goal I've yet to reach, but I know I'm close.

I think this obsession started when I saw one of the Couriers. No matter how fast I flew, I couldn't keep up.

So I started training myself for high-speed flight.

As the speeds increased, so did the risks. Hitting a bug at normal flight speeds hurts. Hitting one at high speed, that can majorly ruin your day.

Cadwal taught me to wear a mask, so that the face the bugs hit isn't mine. A rogue encounter with a bird taught me to armor my tail.

Except, for every bit of protective armor I wore, I flew
slower
and slower
and slower.

Then, for my hatchday celebration, Cadwal and Melarnic gifted me with mechanical wings.

And I flew faster,
and faster,
and faster,
and even faster
than I'd ever flown before.

And I still can't catch the couriers!
