______ The cold intensified, freezing him from the inside out. Shivering violently, he instinctively reached out to swim up. But his claws met nothing more than chilly water. Fear swarmed deep in his belly, when suddenly, Her voice echoed from around him.

______ "Little one...I am...here."

______ He stopped instantly, small head swiveling around. Behind him, he caught sight of Her. Two bright shards of amethyst peered into him, and the Shadowbinder stepped out of the lurking shadows, her massive hulking form filling up the smaller dragon's entire field of vision. Immediately, Lotus ducked his head low, bowing to her.

______ "Little one...I am...your...mother. Such...formalities...are...not required."

______ Her deep voice reverberated into his skull, and he gaped in awe as She pressed Her long narrow nose against his in greeting. Lotus quickly returned the gesture, and their contact ignited sparks of deep-seated joy inside his petit body.

______ "Little one...it is time...to grow. A time of change...is upon us."

______ Her eyes blinked slowly. Balancing herself with her wings, She gently cupped the tiny fae in her claws.

______ "You too...must...change...if you are...to acclimate...to this...new...world."

______ Lotus felt a tingling sensation creep along his spine, spreading warmth through his limbs. Suddenly, he felt so exhausted. So tired...

______ "I gift you...my strength...in hopes...that you...will...learn...to adapt...as well.

______ The tingling stopped, and was abruptly replaced with sharp pains. Lotus coughed out, wheezing as the Shadowbinder filled his every sense. The aching pangs spasmed violently, and Lotus distantly wondered if this was what dying felt like.

______ "No, little one. You are...not dying. You are..being reborn."

______ The torment left him wailing in agony, digging his nails into the Shadowbinder's hands, but She only crooned gently. She set him on the floor again, and finally, finally, the pain waned. The excruciating stings melted away, and Lotus managed the energy to sit up with a groan.

______ "Little one...you are ready."
