"What do you do when the very world you're bound to doesn't want you?"

He never felt connected to Nature. Despite his name's meaning, despite the fact that his colors blend into a bank of fresh flowers with no difficulty, Papillon does not feel good enough about himself to be a part of Nature. instead, he likes Wind flight, slightly disconnected from it all, a butterfly wandering in the breeze instead of among the flowers.

Other dragons know him as a quiet soul; a much fewer number of them realize it's because of a lack of self-esteem rather than any humble shyness. Born in the Nature flight, he grew up playing, like the generations of hatchlings before him, in the wild tangles of the Viridian Labyrinth. While his fellows tended to the wildlife around them, putting their latent magic to use causing flowers to bloom and birds to be fed, however, he preferred his solitary wanderings around the Gardens and the Gladeveins--anything to get away from the mounting pressure he felt keenly, even as young as he was.

By what--or, rather by who? No one less than the Gladekeeper, goddess of untamed, uncontrollable life, she who marked him as her follower with his deep green eyes. Yet almost everyday, as he walked the paths around the aqueducts alone, he felt like this was a mistake.

He told as much to his parents, once, when he had felt particularly open. Immediately, they set upon him: you aren't a mistake! See how green your eyes are, like our home; see your pink scales, and how you blend in among the flowers perfectly! Your name, even--what does a butterfly do but flitter about among flowers? You belong here.

That night, the young dragon stayed up; the rustling of the leaves outside his family's den was too loud. Where his parents' words were meant to comfort, they only opened his eyes to a bigger question. Maybe it wasn't just his circumstances that were the mistake. Maybe he was the mistake, especially his attempts to escape said circumstances. After all, who was he to defy an actual god--the god who created his home, no matter how unwanted a home it was?

He was a great many lowly things, but he did not consider himself stupid. He knew what happened to dragons who defied gods.

The next morning, he was gone.

Ever since that night, Papillon has wandered across Sorneith, a haste in his steps and a permanent hint of fear in his eyes. Though he prefers the Windswept Plateau, and the Wind flight, out of all the places and groups he has encountered on his journey, he stays in one place only a month at most at a time. When asked why he does this, he smiles a tired smile and says, simply: "There is always another horizon to go to."

Then, he looks up, to the current horizon; never, however, do his eyes face north, where the Behemoth's millions of leaves whisper in the breeze.
