Biography

"animating with sludge magic"
Melar sighed. The air in the lab was thick and humid, coating his scales like a second skin. A table sat in front of him, it’s surface covered in half-finished plans and solutions boiling away in beakers. The imperial examined his work, it was a result of a day spent locked away, toiling away at whatever mixture his mind thought up. But today... today was a slow day. It was one of the days where Melar could do little more than stare blankly at the hissing vials in front of him, their burning aroma stinging his nose. The acrid scent was a mix of ingredients he could barely remember, let alone pronounce, and magic- pure, arcane, energy. He looked intently at his latest experiment. It was a shifting mass of green ooze, rising and falling as it sat in a small glass box. It’d been like that for weeks, Melar had been monitoring it most attentively. He’d been hoping for something, some sort of shape, a sign of life, but it’d been in that state ever since he’d concocted it.
What had he done wrong? Melar had found he’d been asking himself that quite often as of late. When an experiment failed, when another sample was thrown out, he found himself pondering his mistakes. But he had to persevere, for the sake of magic and innovation, he had to continue his work. A squeaking sound broke him out of his reverie. He looked down to see a small, inky black, slarg looking up at him, sludge sloughing off of his form. His tar-topper slarg was his most prized experiment. He was Melar’s only companion, the only one he needed in all honestly. The perfect fusion of magic and science, he’d grown fond of the little black ball of slime. Now, he looked up at Melar with curious eyes, dripping drops of tar onto the floor. “Why hello there,” Malar said in greeting. His companion gurgled cheerily in response, doing his best imitation of a smile. The imperial returned the grin, albeit with much less zeal. “What might you be doing, little friend? Care to share.” Malar didn’t expect a response but still, his creation made for a surprisingly competent conversation partner. Yes, he’d rather have him over any other loud mouthed creature who’d berate or mock him for his work. They’d claim that magic had no place in science, that his work was unhallow. “I suppose not,” Malar sighed, “I’ve had quite the loathsome day myself, little friend, I’m afraid my work has come to a stand still.” Perhaps he’d mistaken it, but he thought he saw an irritated quiver pass over the slarg. “What’s the matter, little friend?” He laughed, “Perhaps you are feeling...jealous?” The small drake gave a grumble. This only caused Malar to chuckle again, before he turned back to his work. “Don’t worry, little friend, nothing could replace you. No matter what I create.” Perhaps he imagined it, but Malar thought he heard a small squeak of approval. |
