Magic grows stronger when the air chills and the leaves begin to change color. Some say its because the earth itself is preparing for the coming winter and extends it magical properties to prepare. Others say autumn is the only time of year when the thin boundary between the living and the dead becomes blurred. All types of magic become stronger during this time of year and those that use magic frequently can feel a shift in their power. Many battles between mages and witches are fought in the autumn months when all are at their peak in strength. Although some magic users use their strengthened powers for their own benefit, others use it to progress the season and help it move naturally through the various stages.

The line between the living and the dead must be controlled. Dragons that use their strengthened magic to control this thin and blurring line are rumored to be the Keepers of Autumn. Using their magic, the Keepers of Autumn extend their magical force deep into the other life and attempt to maintain the spirits passing through to visit the world of the living once more. Peaceful spirits that only wish to see their home one more time easily pass through the magical barriers. Malevolent spirits are kept on the other side, forced back by strengthening magical force. This is the main purpose of the Keepers of Autumn. To prevent evil spirits from worming their way across the blurring line and into the world of the living. If a spirit does escape, the Keepers rush to them and attempt to move them back across the line.

Keepers of Autumn come from a long line of magical defenders. Some dragons don't realize that they are a Keeper, others don't want to be a Keeper, and still some wish they were. Keepers manage their duties during autumn only. They arrive in various clans and do basic duties before autumn, and then either leave or slumber during winter to replenish their magical reserves. Keepers are known to stay close to clans that they choose as their clan, and typically don't leave clans that they have come to call home. Regardless of their loyalties, or if they accept what their position is or not, their magical powers cannot be ignored, especially when autumn comes around.
