Biography

tumblr_nnl7rjLl9W1u83h92o4_250.png Zero
;; First Mate of the Dragon's Wing | he/him/his

"An imperial loomed behind the Captain of the Dragon's Wing, like a foreboding stormfront. He said nothing. Scars rippled across his hide - long slashes from battle, and thick bands around his limbs. He moved as if trying to appear smaller than he truly was. I was not fooled, however; this imperial could crush me without second thought.

I later caught him conversing very seriously with a pair of hatchlings. They were discussing the wishing mechanics of rainbows."

Information
Name // Zero
-- Meaning of name //

Alignment // Chaotic Good

Class // Barbarian

Personality // Zero is quiet. So quiet, in fact, that many mistake him for dumb or mute. But he is simply a thoughtful dragon, speaking only when he has something to say - and when he does, his voice rumbles the very timbers of the ship. Zero often asks naive questions, and the simplest things fill him with a childlike wonder. But don't mistake this youth for inability; Zero has killed more dragons than he's befriended, and is quick to resort to violence.
-- Likes // storms, open skies, and the ship's deck
-- Dislikes // confined spaces, chains, and the scent of blood

Background // BACKGROUND
-- History // Zero hatched from an abandoned egg. However, he wasn't alone at hatching - rather, he was with dozens of others. Other eggs, lost, stolen, or sold - and all hatched into the black market. Left unnamed, left in the dark, and left alone.

The hatchlings with nice colors and weaker builds became luxury slaves, sold for high price and intended for show. Dragons like Zero, however, did not receive such an easy fate. Their size and dull colors destined them for harsh physical work, far from a compassionate eye. The lucky ones found a passable life in mines or work camps. Others, however, found a darker fate inside the Ring.

Of course, there wasn't just one Ring. There were pits and bowls, holes and hollows, under the earth or above it. Zero visited many in his time as a battle slave. But they were all the same. Dragons above - leering, jeering faces - and Zero below. Stuck in the Ring, with no way out but to fight.

And fight he did. Dragons, beastclanners, and even wild animals fell at his claws. As Zero grew, so did his reputation. He was Unconquerable. Death embodied. Nothing escaped the Ring alive but him. Zero reveled in it; for with every victory, he grew closer to Above.

Finally came the one he couldn't defeat. A fresh-caught killer, an imperial nearly twice his size. She was a warrior with the scars to prove it, but fought with the honor of the battlefield. In the Ring, there were no such rules. The battle was legendary; it drew crowds from every edge of Sorineth. But in the end, the warrior won her victory. And Zero lost his reputation, and Zero was nothing. Again.

Yet that battle, that warrior, changed the young fighter. He heard her whispered ideas as they fought; ideas of something called 'freedom' and something named 'peace'. Where there was no fighting, no Ring, and no master to force it. Freedom and Peace sounded like a glorious place.

Spurred by such dreams, Zero resisted. He lost fights, just enough to stay alive. He found himself flogged, flayed alive again and again. His master lost money, but he gained something much more valuable. Something to fight for. Something beyond just the next bout and the next meal.

And when he was on the edge, at the barrier between life and death, waiting to fall, that was when Theta came.

The Pirate captain broke his chains. She saw something in the young imperial - she never did say what - and acted. She ghosted him away from the Ring, away from the master, away from the next life-ending fight. She lead him towards Freedom. Freedom and Peace, on the deck of a ship.

Peace was a big place. Freedom, even bigger. He'd never seen such open sky, unblocked by chains, or felt the wind on his scales, free from restraints. He'd never known that so much water existed. Enough to submerge himself thousands of times over. Theta called it a 'sea'. To Zero, it was Freedom.

When he asked how big Freedom was, Theta gave him an odd look. He never quite figured out why. But her answer - it was amazing. "Unending, I suppose. That's the nature of the word. It just keeps going." Zero soon learned that the sea - the Freedom - did, in fact, have an end. But it might've been limitless for its sheer size.

Theta took him to the Ship. They walked - sailed - out to Freedom. She called him her First Mate. Instead of Master, Theta used the title Captain. It took him a long time to learn the two were not synonymous. He was Free. He did not have a master. Free, however, was not what the Captain called a 'name'. The idea was foreign to him. Something of his own? He could own something? True, it was not a real object. But it was his. When the imperial confided that he did not own a name, Theta took it upon herself to assign one.

Under a master, he had been nothing. Now, he was Zero.

Not nothing. A possibility. An opening. A start.

Notes //
+A strange mix of childish and violent
+Overprotective of his entire crew - but especially Theta
+Enjoys stargazing
+Cannot stand to be below decks for long; Zero needs a horizon
+Likes colorful and delicate things, like beads and rainbows and teacups, even if he dares not touch them, for fear of his own strength
