Almarya lived in the spaces between rooms, between halls, between people. Hidden passages were her domain and Almarya knew them all by heart. Even the ones she could no longer fit in as she grew older and larger.
When she was younger, Almarya had a habit of getting lost in them, in places only the servants knew of, in places her twin was to scared to follow. It was fun, she thought, to explore these lost places where no one regularly steps. It was even worth the scoldings that she would no doubt receive when she lost track of time and missed her lessons. Ironically, though, when she was called to be taken to another clan, she soon realized her role here would be the very thing she disliked the most - a Fire representative. Sure, it might be something she should be proud of, and all she'd really have to do is lie around anyway, but she knew she'd be asked to perform a show of some sort that had to do with fire, or she'd be forced to wear something incredibly hot and probably inhumane, but she looked like a Fire dragon, so wasn't that okay? No, of course not. But if she wanted to stay here she had no choice. Her Blazing Goblin was actually not forced upon her - it merely took an interest in her fiery coloring (as nobody in the clan really had scales as striking as hers), and soon she had a permanent companion. Well, more like a huge fire hazard, a great annoyance, and the scariest creature she had ever seen and why did it have to keep following her. Along with her newfound role, she'd also have to get used to that. (That was its name, and was always pronounced in a way that made it sound like a vile creature, and that was that.) Thankfully it was easy to lose once she strolled confidently into someplace that That found incredibly scary, and she would look back and laugh at it as it looked at her helplessly as she disappeared. After weeks of searching, Almarya had finally stumbled upon the perfect hiding spot - one that That would never follow her into, one that nobody ever knew about, and one where she could just sit peacefully and meditate. It was a nice, dark, shadowy place lined by brambles that even glowing mushrooms couldn't creep into - the light level pleased her, especially since she was normally surrounded by fire or light of some kind that terrified her. She might disappear for hours on end and nobody would know - because who keeps track of where a Fire representative goes? And That couldn't talk. It was just that. Besides, it would wait ever so patiently for her, just sitting in a blazing fire that it had created itself with a brush of its tail (Almarya would always have to tend to a forest fire once she got back; otherwise she'd stay in her place for days.), and though it terrified her to no end, she was starting to appreciate its everlasting loyalty. She was fairly content for now. |
