16442.png Ever since he first escaped the egg, Solveig has wanted to fly. The land beyond the tops of the trees called him to climb higher and higher as he grew. His parents tried to keep close watch on the boy, but with their own demons and the other hatchlings to deal with, Solveig was too often left to his own devices. And despite the cold he felt like a constant friend, he felt happy in the thick branches of his home.
As he grew older, Solveig felt himself go stiff sometimes. If he stayed in the shade too long. If he did not sun his wings, on which he saw icy blue veins travel across soft membrane. His mother warned him, "You must stay warm, little one. As long as you are warm, you will not freeze. Here we are safe. Just stick to the sunlight. We'll be safe here." She never said from what, but late at night, Solveig heard it whisper to him as he shivered. Travel South. Fly south. South will set you free. 13409.png
5919.png One day, he was too restless to wait for the sun to warm his wings before he began his daily climb. Ignoring the stiffness in his muscles, the whisper became a scream as he crawled out onto the branch. Before he knew it his wings were open and his claws had crawled to the edge of the branch. FLY! FLY!
He did not fly. And he never would.
