Biography

ᛗᛟᚦᛁ
The Competitive

Modi lives in his brother’s shadow. He wishes he didn’t.

He and Magni hatched together, tumbling from their eggs into the world at once with Modi just an instant behind. It was little surprise that they became inseparable afterwards.

However, as they grew older, Modi’s affection for his brother soured. He was somehow always to blame for any trouble they got into – not because of anything Magni did or said, but because everyone seemed to have decided that Magni was perfect, and Modi was not. It didn’t help that he was short-tempered and flew into frustrated rage when they were caught misbehaving, whereas Magni bowed his head in contrition and quietly accepted the punishment. Or that Magni was an affable little hatchling, willing to talk to anyone, while Modi was reserved and, when forced into conversation, never knew the right things to say.

The favouritism, whether intentional or not, only got worse when they began their training as warriors. Modi desperately wanted to prove himself and threw himself into every aspect with ferocious competitiveness. He excelled with a quarterstaff and bow, and swiftly became competent with a variety of other weapons. However, try as he might, he found himself constantly compared to Magni: he wasn’t as strong, his form wasn’t as neat, he hadn’t cleaned his armour as thoroughly … there was always something. There still is. If it isn’t said out loud, Modi hears it anyway inside his own head, and every time he falls short of his brother, it feeds the seething bitterness that he carries in the pit of his stomach.

It’s not that Magni is better. Not really. Modi knows that they are equal – that he is superior, in fact! Nine times out of ten, he is the victor in their sparring matches, not Magni. Yet his brother remains the golden child, and Modi can’t help but resent him for it.

Magni is oblivious – both to his own position of virtue and to Modi’s irritation. He thinks all of Modi’s complaints and sarcastic retorts are made in fun. It both helps and doesn’t, because for all it feeds Modi’s annoyance it also reminds him: Magni loves him, and cannot imagine any real bad feeling between them.

Of course, when Modi is reminded of that, he feels guilty, and begrudges Magni all over again for it, and the cycle continues.

It surprises most that Modi remains at Magni’s side. Part of it is stubbornness: after all, the two of them were assigned together to patrol the clan’s Starwood Strand border, and he refuses to abandon a responsibility that was given to both of them, especially when it would make Magni look good and himself look bad. However, it is also because he doesn’t want to hurt Magni, and he knows that leaving would break his brother’s heart.

This is another source of simultaneous fondness and exasperation.

So Modi puts up with his brother and their endless one-sided competition, and vents his nastier feelings through spite and belligerence and frequent, vicious sparring.

Despite everything, he would never intentionally harm his brother, or allow harm to come to him. He is fiercely protective of all of his siblings, though his often antagonistic manner towards them might suggest otherwise. He has been known to brawl with dragons for even small verbal slights against Magni, Valkyrja and Thruda, which is ironic when Modi himself has said far worse than anything he has fought over. Then again, he finds catharsis in a savage fracas and the thrill of defeating a foe.

Though Modi trained to be a warrior, his particular skills are more suited to covert scouting. He excels at disappearing into the undergrowth, and does so often when on patrol with his brother. When he does show himself, he enjoys creeping out of the shadows in the most unsettling manner possible: it makes Magni roll his eyes, but Modi sees it as a tiny bit of payback for all the mindless chatter he has to listen to as they walk the woodland paths.

His skill at stealth also makes him a superior hunter, though it is undermined by his complete and utter lack of patience.
