"It burns."
"I know. But it is the only way. The only way out of the darkness."
The Ridgeback stood proud, his eyes the glaring red of a natural-born Plague dragon. The inky darkness that had consumed him swirled around him, and he snarled at the warlocks that surrounded him, and at the rings that held him still.
"I don't want out. The darkness is not power, but it is comfort. It is peace. You could join it, too. It doesn't hurt anymore, Blade. It's like it never hurt at all."
"Olympus, it's not natural, it's -"
"Since when have you cared about nature? Since when have you cared about what is right?"
"I'm sorry Olympus, but this has to happen."
The burning began anew as the warlocks chanted. Blade flew up and gently applied a salve, and the burning lessened - but it was still just as intense in his mind. The darkness began to flee before the bright light. And it hurt, again.
He burned, and his wings began to glow, a pulsing, magmatic orange. A reminder of who he was. The Shade retreated again. And, to his surprised, he fought it. He pushed it back, his true self roaring to the fore. He remembered.
He remembered the pain. He remembered his failure. His clan, the harm that he had caused with his inaction. He remembered his promise to himself - that he would never allow anyone to be hurt again. He remembered submitting to the Shade, to its promises of peace and forgiveness.
But, he remembered.
He remembered his strength. His power. His conviction that he would help his clan in all endeavors. Finding Blade after the fall of his compatriots, and joining with the Clan of Nightmares. Tearing his way through the Coliseum, destroying all in his path - because they threatened his clan. He remembered his friends, that those who surrounded him needed him to remember because they could not lose him to this thing from beyond the stars.
His roar nearly split the stone above him. The candles in the room were snuffed by the sheer force of his will. But, the light from his magmatic marks never lessened - they grew brighter until they were searing, and his eyes glowed anew as well. He turned and locked eyes with BloodedBlade.
"I remember."
And he was never going to forget again.
