Wings are a dragon's greatest asset. They enable him to fly, to explore, to bring himself closer to that feeling of power that the deities must have felt before they disappeared from the eyes of their followers. Wings are strong and powerful but they can also be damaged easily and require careful use. A dragon without wings, some say, is hardly a dragon at all. If he cannot fly, cannot bend the winds to his will with the appendages attached to his back, then he is not better than a scaled worm. For wind dragons especially, not being able to fly would seem like a curse placed on them from Windsinger himself.

Throughout the many years of Sornieth, there were bound to be dragons who had experienced this. Their wings may have been damaged at a young age, limiting their flying ability or halting it altogether. Other times their wings simply were not strong enough to carry them in the art of flying. For a skydancer by the name of Valkoor, it was more along the lines of this second one. From the moment his egg hatched, his parents were worried for him. His green wings were not like those of a dragon. Instead, they resembled a dragonfly’s more than anything. They had a thin and scaly quality to them, shimmering in the light and shifting of their own accord in the breezes that blew through the Zephyr Steppes. The skydancers worried that there little would someday wish to spread his wings like those around him and take to the sky far above… but his wings would stop this dream before it could even take root.

They had no need to worry.

Valkoor was part of an ancient tribe called Zephyr Dragons, born into the clan Dominandi Zephyrus. It was small of course, like any flock is, but they were a close knit group and each felt like family. With so many dragons around him who loved flying, it had been assumed that Valkoor would be jealous of them, but he never was. Yes, he would often wish to join his friends in the sky but it wasn’t so he could fly, it was so he could play with them. When their wings grew tired though, they returned their talons to the ground and engaged in games with him. Though Zephyr Dragons were said to have come from the Windsinger’s very essence, they still had to return to the earth.

When he wasn’t playing with those around him, the young skydancer was foraging for rare and exciting plants, curiosity fueling him in his learning and adventures among the greenery of the Zephyr Steppes. Overtime he became more knowledgeable about these plants and was assigned the task of his clan’s herbalist. Knowing that his skills were both wanted and needed brought pride and happiness to his heart. Now that he’d grown up, no one ever gave a second thought to his wings and if he were asked about them, Valkoor would say that he himself often forgot that they were more unique than the many other pairs of wings around him. They were part of him and they wouldn’t change. He wouldn’t want them to. Everything that he did and was had occurred because of the dragonfly like wings. He didn’t need to fly to feel the wind and plants didn’t grow in the clouds.

Life in the Dominandi Zephyrus was simple, carefree, and calm. There were few problems with other dragons and even fewer among the dragons within the clan. Valkoor is babied a little by the clan leader Ilyana but she’s the only one. Everyone else treats him as an equal, as if he had wings just like they did. As the clan’s herbalist, the skydancer tends a garden within the camp and often forages for new plants. Due to the flock’s migratory tendency, it takes Valkoor a little longer to reach the new site than the rest of the flock and while some would expect him to complain because everything must be done on foot, he prefers it this way. It allows him time to look for new plants that he either doesn’t have anymore or for plants that he has yet to find and add to his collection. All in all it’s a very peaceful and pleasant life and he wouldn’t change anything about it… even his wings.
