Flashing lights brought back that night, illuminating darkened memories she worked constantly to keep pushed away. The lightning often lit the sky above them, and so she no longer cared to look towards the sky. Like the sprawling trading post, the paths in her mind grew crooked and stained. Some days, she found herself lost there, amongst those pathways. On those days, Nell would pace through the grand tent with a smudge stick- red cedar or white sage or some other sacred item, carefully collected when the moon was highest or the days at their shortest or only on a certain day of the year. Nell always explained what she would use and why, but Fernweh rarely listened.
