Biography
Maeda Matsu was the wife of Maeda Toshiie, one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's generals. Toshiie was named part of the council to guard Hideyori after Hideyoshi's death. However, the ailing Toshiie died a year after Hideyoshi. After the death of her husband, the strong-willed and intelligent Matsu became a nun. She secured the safety of her clan by becoming a hostage in Edo, the seat of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (whom she loathed). All of her sons became daimyo. Her daughters married into prestigious families.
