The Earthshaker’s barren land was slick from the rain. Glitch’s paws were caked in mud, and droplets of water gathered in her headband and slid down her cheeks.

The summer rain was good. It rejuvenated the earth so that the plants may grow, the prey may eat, and they may hunt. It washed away the dry earth and revealed artifacts, coins, and chests. And still it frustrated her in how it made her wings too heavy to fly far and her made her stumpy legs slip. When it stormed, there were mudslides. It brought and took, like a constant push and pull. It was for her to know how to take — to collect mushrooms on foggy mornings and coins on a wet dawn. Rain irritated her nostrils when it dripped down her snout, but it did not waste a day.

It had rained the day she’d been brought to the clan. She’d been young, but worldly and ready to move beyond catching beetles in her mouth and dragging home dirt-logged plushes. The denizens of the Earthshaker leaned on one another. They were all born and thrived from the same earth, and when it finally pulled, they would become it. Glitch had never been nervous about the earthly cycle, but she also knew how to be shrewd enough to run with it, not against it.

“I’m Glitch,” she’d said loudly to them, her new clan, with her green wings pulled tightly to her wet back, “I’m a scavenger.”

Not a very adept one at the moment, however, and it was frustrating her. The day had not been fruitful so far, and the satchels tied to her sides were too light to go home yet. She had ventured further from the lair towards the tangled trees, as she did when it rained. More often were chests buried in the supple soil beneath trees than in the hard grounds of the plains. There rocks had a tendency to roll and every patch of grass seemed identical to the last.

Her clan was unique, Glitch had known from the start. Corvikk frightened her parents and they hadn’t even wanted to leave her. Perhaps they had been imagining a clan started by two unassuming dragons, nurturing a nest of newly lain eggs. What they found was a tengu and a skydancer with bandaged wounds, somehow granted a cup of land by the Earthshaker. Glitch was too young and headstrong to be properly afraid. By the time she was old enough to, she’d forgotten why she should mind.

Fog clung to the canopy of the trees, but her brown eyes their attention to the ground. She then noticed a pool of mud cradled between two rearing roots — water collecting in disturbed soil. Glitch stepped towards it, ignoring the satchel that loosened and slid down her neck as she craned her head to closer observe the earth. The ground was soft when she slid her paw into the cold water, and sure enough, her nails scraped against wood. A bubble of relief rose in her chest. She scraped up pawfuls of mud and dirty water from around the chest until an iron handle stuck up above the waterline. Her teeth clamped down on it and she pulled backwards, her feet staggering in the mud until it eased free from hole with a loud sucking noise.

As she let go the chest collapsed onto its side, and several coins fell through a jagged crack in its side. Whoever had buried this had not done a thorough job if it was shallow enough to come unearthed in a rainstorm, but one dragon's folly always resulted in another's reward. Glitch pulled at the soggy wood around the crack and it easily broke, spilling treasure and a chipped collar onto the ground. She scooped the worn, golden coins into the pack that hung about her neck.

She tightened the drawstring with her teeth and spared a look at the sky. The clouds were dark and thick, but the air was light enough to know that dawn had long since gone and the rest of the clan would be awake, tucked away within the dry stove walls of the den. Glitch stretched out her dripping wings, flapping them and shaking her wet fur. The satchels bounced against her sides. The rain had soaked the canvas material, but the coins were triumphantly heavy settling back against her chest.
